Vast?

I haven't really paid much attention to vast. Recent reading suggests its a satellite broadcast of FTA TV across the country. The FTA stations don't want people to have it because it means they can't do localised ads?

But are we actually talking about a few satellites broadcasting a prefect signal across the entire country? The alternative to this setup is 1000's of antenna arrays using huge amounts of power to try send the FTA signal a few hundred miles in each direction?

Is the only drawback of Satellite TV less effective advertising?

Yep

Along with decoder costs per tv and small percentage of line of sight issues.
