'Appalling taste': Foxtel to remove bestiality billboard

"Foxtel has apologised and said it will on Wednesday night remove a Kings Cross billboard depicting bestiality that was "clearly in appalling taste". The prominent billboard advertising the Foxtel arts channel Studio is currently placed on William Street in Kings Cross and depicts a man simulating sex with a pig."

The pay TV cesspool

"Here's an opinion you won't read in the Murdoch press any time soon: pay TV monopoly Foxtel is an overpriced, sometimes putrid repository of trash TV whose standards fall further as its arrogance grows. How it has managed to convince more than 2 million Australians to pay for its substandard service is beyond me."

I'm glad I don't pay for this "substandard service"...

Interestingly enough the writer of the 'cesspool' (and just what is cess?) goes on to admit he's a customer.

As for the ad, I haven't actually seen any article look beyond it to the show its advertising. Its called Black Mirror (by the BBC) and its actually a very interesting (Twilight Zonish) look into one possible aspect of future of social media (in a nutshell, the PM of England is told to have sex with a pig on national TV or the beloved princess of Wales (recently kidnapped) will be killed.)

Not saying such images should be splashed around on billboards, but I suspect the shows producers will see a certain irony in the twitterverses response. :)

Regards

Peter Gillespie

I decided to subscribe to foxtel, mainly because I wanted to watch more programs in HD, particularly live sport.  It is a national scandal that so many Australians have purchased high definition TVs only to be fed mainly up scaled standard definition material.  How the FTA stations are permitted to serve up so much substandard TV (in terms of lack of HD material) disappoints me greatly.

So please don' t talk about substandard service to me!

Its a bigger scandal you have to pay to watch ads, listen to poor sound quality and often heavily compressed garbage!  I'd rather not pay because watching tv isnt the most important thing in many peoples lives.

Enjoy your foxtel!

I hope people here realise that one of the reasons FTA is the way it is today is due to Foxtel, its owners, and their influence on the media and government policy...

I don't watch Foxtel adds (or FTA adds for that matter), I slip watch, saves ~25% of my valuable time.  The IQHD works a charm, just needs a bigger hard drive.

Cheers

It really depends on individual needs. I enjoy my Foxtel and definitey get my moneys worth. I would rather spend $100 a month on Foxtel than $60 or more on a smart phone which is of no use to me.

I must be one of the strange minorities who only bought a HD TV so my PS3 would look great

Broadcast TV? WTF is that? My TV also doubles up as a monitor for my computer - so the only channel I really use is BT, with the occasional YT..

Although, the other HD TV has Foxtel connected to it - only time I use it for the footy

TV viewing habits are changing, and companies are addressing it with apps like Foxtel Go, ABC iView etc
Gen Y watch less and less TV, they are too busy with social networking with TwitFace because I heard YOLO
unless you are a Buddhist or Hindu :)

If it wasn't for sport I wouldn't need Foxtel, with services like Netflix, Hulu Plus, BBC iPlayer, Channel 4oD

Whatever the reason, your Australian government has allowed this to occur. I am glad you at least seem to acknowledge the state of affairs in FTA TV. It continues to be a national scandal.  I am constantly told that as Joe Average doesn't seem to mind then we will continue to get up-scaled SD material. I am not certain that Joe is happy at all. In any case I subscribed to get the full use of HD TV - simple as that.

Its the lack of HD AFL that made me switch.

Full use with Foxtel, what with their bitrates? Better than FTA HD, but certainly not up to scratch.

The only way to get "full use" out of your HD set it to watch high quality blurays and full uncompressed bluray rips.

I'll try to be succinct but in my view to answer your question its a combination of these two things. Offering something they want you to think you need (first it was no ads, these days its sport and fast track TV shows, tomorrow it will be something else), then doing what they can to make them part of your way of life (IQ device, plus the fact that your subscriber spending forms part of your regular living expenses) so that you will keep subscribing (I know from friends who worked the phones there that one of their key targets is retaining their current subscribers). I reckon thats the formula.

They're growing every day, bit by bit. Right now their penetration is around 35-40% of the viewing market I think.
