Hi Guys and Girls

Long time reader, first time poster.

I am looking for a Cd player to go along with my Denon 591 AVR, Usher S520's and B&W Sub. I have had a look around the .net and it appears that their are many options.

Happy to go 2nd hand(I live in Vic). Looking at no more than $500 "unless" it is a must buy :w00t:  .

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Contemplate streaming CD content via network and a music renderer...I could never go back to a CD player and optical discs after experiencing the convenience of streaming content from a server.

Very subjective question.

You need to have a listen to various CD Players in your setup and decide for yourself.

Al has given you a good start on some reasonable CD players to try. It might be ideal in my setup, but absolute garbage in yours, too many variables.

Rega Apollo works well in my setup, but may not in yours. Another one for you to try however :)

I purchased the Emotiva ERC1 and very happy with it. There is a new model now and its in your budget. Website shows it as unavailable. May be worth an email. I think the weakest link may be your AVR.

Good luck.

I'm with Gregory. I wouldn't bother with a dedicated CD player through a relatively budget AVR. I've got a reasonably high quality HT set up and I'm still finding myself feeling a bit ho-hum over 2ch listening, whether that's via a borrowed CA cd player, Oppo 93 as a transport, or streaming Apple lossless via a Sonos Connect. The sound itself is fine but it just doesn't have that same presence/ambiance compared to listening through a stereo amp.

Crikey, even my Audioengine 5+ active speakers at work sounds at least as good via an iMac and cheap DAC on 2ch stuff as my home HT system costing several $1000's more.

Thanks for all the help guys. I know my AVR isn't great but it's just the beginning. I will upgrade in the future when space and $$$ permits.

Thanks again

I was tempted by that integrated to use as a 2ch pre... Checked the manual just now and no HT bypass connections on rear. Funds are pretty tight anyway after buying the Elektra, Integra and LCR in the last 6 months.

like the arcams most of the upper cambridge units eg the 851 here
http://www.ebay.com....2b3c4932&_uhb=1

do not have a specific htbypass inout but are configurable for processor pass through or ht bypass for any of its inputs. just matter of checking specific units online manual ;)

Thanks again for the responses. In light of some of the suggestions I have decided to look at upgrading my Denon amp with a stereo amp.

I am looking to go second hand and is possible to stick to my $500 budget.

I have been looking at brands such as Rotel, Arcam, Redgum ( Can't find any 2nd hand) and NAD.

If it would be better just to save my pennies then i am more than happy to be told to.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

all those brands have options particularly 2nd hand in that price bracket, if wanting new if wanting a model up from those in your budget your either looking for something on special or on runout/demo models :) all be fine driving the s520s I would think :)

See if you can find a Harmon Kardon HD970.  There may still be some around..They where a good little CD Player.
With a very good DAC, which could be use independently.

As for 2nd hand, used, Redgum products, It would be like looking for Rocking Horse sh** to put on the Rubarb.  People that buy Redgum are buried with it.

Tommy,  you should have a look at www.hifiexchange.com.au .  They have some very fine second hand CD players and amps within your budget.
