Vertigo - Aus Release - 5.1 DTS Master Audio

Movie - 4.5/5 - A truly amazing classic, excellent to see this finally on blu-ray. This movie like north by north west is one of Alfred hitchcock's all time greats and thrilled to watch this again.

PQ - 2-4/5 - PQ is quite variable and this is mainly due to its age. Universal spent a lot of money restoring this film and when you see the extra material on the restoration you get an idea just how poorly it had faired over the years. And given that poor state of affairs they really have done a very good job to get this movie in the condition it is. Still in picture quality it takes you back to an age gone by. Its beautifully photographed and that comes through regardless of the source material but yes at times its just acceptable and others stunning.

AQ - 3/5 - Clean clear with vocals and sound effects to support the movie, obviously given the movies age its nothing like the audio you get with a  modern day Hollywood flic.

Overall -  4.5/5 - An all time great an al time classic, even if a bit variable in picture quality nothing will take away from this beautifully made and beautifully photographed movie and one I very much enjoyed viewing.

some quick screen shots which show the kind of PQ on this release,

MAGIC MIKE -  US release - DTS HDMA - 2.35:1

Wow! Classic Soderbergh.
The cast is perfect - apart from a few minor sessions of over-acting from Channing Tatum in the latter parts of the film.
It explores the seedy side of male stripping and the culture/demographic surrounding the "one time" pleasure seekers and the workers in the industry.
Awesome and heavy.
The picture quality was generally good though sometimes I felt that it was only the centre of he picture that was completely in focus.
Many scenes with yellowy hues to mirror the sunny (though not so sunny  ) Florida coastline.
The AQ was fantastic with plenty of "doof doof" club sounds and fantastic channel separation especially during the hurricane scenes.
Totally absorbing!

FILM: 4.2/5
PQ:4/5
AQ: 4.5/5

This is not a "chick flick.

FINDING NEMO 3D  - Aus release - region free - Dolby True HD 7:1 - 1.78:1

Wow!
No point in giving a plot synopsis, as I am sure most people know the storyline.
The 3D presentation here is incredible. None of the common problems such as cross-talk or banding and sporting a real sense of depth to the picture that is intoxicating to watch.
Not a "pop out of your screen" type film (though every time that Marlin and Nemo were front stage, it was like they were swimming in the room), but an ever present sense of depth and scale and a great technical feel for the colour and vibrance of the underwater world.

The AQ was equally impressive with great channel separation, a fantastically enveloping  score by Thomas Newman and some seriously awesome SW content, especially when the torpedo hits the WW2 minefield.

FILM: 4/5
3D PQ: 4.3/5
AQ: 4.5/5

Edit: Sorry, just realized thgis should be in the A to L section

Red Tails - UK Release - 5.1 DTS Master Audio

Movie - 2/5 - This movie has had a bit of bad press, but still regardless being a bit of a fan of WW2 movies especially ones featuring warbirds I thought I'd check it out. Even though based on real events, it somehow lacks some credibility/authentic/believability. Something doesnt gel

PQ - 4.5/5 - Reference. A bit of cgi very obviously used a lot in this film does take a little away from it. Its almost too perfect in this regard doesnt feel real.

AQ - 4.5/5 - Cant fault it for dynamics, clarity, surround effects, bass and LFE yep reference stuff audio wise

Overall -  2.5/5 - Really cant fault it for PQ and SQ this is about as close to reference as it gets. Overall as a movie though it could be so much more. Storyline and acting and the slightly false sense to this entire movie has taken away from this movie all it could have been ! Didnt regret buying this and watching it but also some regret and disappointment what this movie has turned out to be. Dont get me wrong though I do still think it was worth a watch :)

50/50 - US release - DTS HDMA 5:1 - 1.78:1

A bittersweet, funny/sad film about a young man facing the consequences of a cancer diagnosos which follows his weeks of treatment, his friendships and heart-aches.
Haven't cried as much during a film for years, though it's by no means a chick-flick - and with Seth Rogen as Joseph Gordon Levitt's best buddy, there's also plenty of excellent laughs and gross-out scenes.

The PQ is extremely nice with fantastic black levels and natural colour. A few "low focus" shots here and there, but they are no way distracting.
Low-key music score by Michael Giacchino. There are a few punchy audio moments scattered inbetween a hip, acoustic stage. Nicely balanced dialogue.

FILM: 4/5
PQ: 4/5
AQ: 4/5

MARGIN CALL - US Release - Region free - DTS HDMA 5:1 - 1.78:1

Fascinating and consuming look at one investment company's procedures during the beginning of the US financial crisis in 2008.
So watchable and real - it was quite a disturbing perspective on where we are at .... not only in terms of the "way of the business world", but where we are at as a society and how the culture of greed has become the biggest puppeteer of the ordinary person's life.
Scary stuff.
The PQ was really consistent with a "clinical" look about it. Not much colour utilized, but good clarity and detail. Bit of a mix with black levels, but when they worked, they were excellent!
The AQ was great too, with a dreamy and intoxicating synth type score that crept in at just the right moments..
FILM: 4.5/5
PQ: 4/5
AQ: 4/5

Excellent cast including Kevin Spacey, Jeremy Irons, Zachary Quinto, Paul Bettany and Stanley Tucci - not to mention Simon Baker and Demi :)

THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE - Aus release - 1.85: 1

Fantastic John Ford western with John Wayne and James Stewart in top form.
So many excellent character actors too. Adding colour, humor and dispicable meanness - in the case of Lee Marvin.

The B&W PQ here is really good showing lots of detail and coming from a seemingly flawless print.
AQ was so-so as may be expected and I needed the volume way past my amp's normal level, but the dialogue was clear and I never thought that it was lacking.

FILM: 4.2.5
PQ: 4.3/5
AQ: 3.5/5

Interesting that this film is only available in Australia and Europe (not UK).

Skyfall 2.40:1 - DTS-HD MA 5.1

Region A - locked

PQ: 4.95/5 - Certainly have to say up there with the very best of live action transfers I've seen, the night scenes are reference and the rest is not far behind............

AQ: 5/5 -  Outside of Tron Legacy it has been a long time since I have given 5 to anything but this truly deserves it, not just for the LFE but the whole soundtrack is brilliant, the surrounds are used to perfection and they really have got this on the money............

The Movie: Bond is back, Bond is dead, well obviously not but the premise is entertained, M has a past that comes back to haunt her and with a list of every covert agent being released on the internet (5 every week) many are baying for her head along with a previous double 0 seeking revenge, this movie relies on a story rather than any gimmicks and yet still pays great homage to Bond of the past.

A very different movie again compared to the past but one that is totally in keeping with the renewed Craig franchise and imho exceeds all expectations, if you're a fan I expect you will love it, if not I would certainly suggest to watch it anyway, you won't be disappointed.............

keeper............

Pitch Perfect 1.85:1 - DTS HDMA 5.1

Region A B - Region free.........

PQ: 4.7/5 - I found this pretty good to look at all the way through and thought that it was better PQ wise than most reviews I had read on it.................

AQ: 4.5/5 - Not a brilliant or stunning soundtrack but certainly does not disappoint, good use of surrounds and centre especially ewith the singing side but generally good all round.............

The Movie: This one has turned out to be a bit of a sleeper and has certainly almost gained a cult status, where this move succeeds is that it is fairly original in its context, telling the story of college girls that are attempting to win the annual International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella.

Doesn't sound like much but it is reasonably entertaining and never tries to introduce a moral side to the story, highly humorous in the make up of the girls that are eventually assembled and though it has its slow patches it does get you in, good cast and aussie Rebel Wilson is an absolute pisser at times..........

worth a rent and a keeper here, if in doubt have a read of the review at blu-ray dot com for a more informed review.............

Thirteen Days (German Import) 1.85:1 - DTS HDMA 5.1

Region B - locked.........

PQ: 3.9/5 - This comes up well on the blu ray transfer and is great to look at times, historical and some archival footage are used well and thus PQ suffers in some areas though I expect it to be directors intent at times ................

AQ: 4/5 - This is not a movie that ever tries to impress with it's SQ, but merely as it is high on dialog comes through very well, when it shows the nuke scenes again it does not try to emphasize itself sonically and one again would believe this to be intentional by the director............

The Movie: A very real and true story of the Cuban missile crisis and shows just how close we came to worlds end at the time, the acting and cast is brilliant and the tension created is sublime at times, I am a massive believer that this turn of events was the military precursor to the US military organizing the Kennedy assassinations (YMMV)..........

worth a rent if ever locally released and a keeper here.............

Skyfall

Region B - UK sourced via amazon.co.uk. purchased in the triple pack as I didn't have the previous 2 (Casino Royale & Quantum of Solace) in bluray

VQ - 4.75 top level, amongst  the best I have seen, quality special effects and action sequences.

AQ - 4.75 Good solid LFE, in fact the whole soundtrack is fantastic, good use of surrounds and clear crisp dialogue.

Story - 4.5 An overall "darker" version of Bond, as seems to be the trend these days with franchises. Solid story line but appears rushed at times and yet slow at others, this pacing is the reason for the 4.5.  Almost made up for with the use of the Aston Martin, clever touch.

Summary - Highly recommended

Cheers
Gary

Zero Dark Thirty 1.85:1 - DTS HDMA 5.1

Region A (locked).........

PQ: 4.9/5 - Stunning to look at in every sense, an absolute visual feast and demo worthy.................

AQ: 4.7/5 - The sound never has to do a lot in this move as there is a lot of talk, when it does spring to action it handles explosions and everything it needs to very well............

The Movie: I will assume that most know this is about the hunt for and capture of Usama Bin Laden, it is extremely well told and I found even though I knew what was going to take place towards the end, that it still had me on the edge of my seat, a great cast makes this just as enjoyable, easily one of the movies many should see

worth a rent and a keeper here.............

Red Dawn (2012) 2.40:1 - DTS-HD MA 5.1

Region A - locked

PQ: 4.6/5 - As you would expect a pretty crisp transfer of a recently released movie, comes up pretty well..............

AQ: 4.8/5 -  This one lacks nothing in the audio department at all, in fact it is pretty impressive at times and I quite enjoyed the aggressive mix............

The Movie: Another remake and from what I've read most don't like this version, as I didn't see the original I can only say that I found it watchable enough and for those that don't know the story line the US gets invaded by North Korea (nowadays they just want to nuke them) and freedom that was there one day is gone the next, some of the towns youngsters form their own resistance and fight back, my only complaint is a lack of insight into why but it's basically a popcorn flick for mine, with some up and comers just getting some screen time between other stuff they do..............

Worth a rent.............

STORM SURFERS 3D - Aus Edition - Region Free - 1.85:1 - DTS HDMA

You gotta like surfing films to enjoy this one.
Lots of big thrills and big spills in this documentary about 2 famous Aussie surfers (Tom Carroll and Ross Clarke - Jones) and their quest to find and surf the "big" waves of the southern ocean.
Great to see guys approaching 50, doing this kind of stuff. Thoroughly entertaining with some excellent 3D and a crystal clear image most of the time.
May have been nice to have a bit more Aussie music on the soundtrack, but the immersion in the ocean surf and the constant watery surrounds, was excellent.

TOP GUN 3D - US Release - Region Free - 2.35:1 - DTS HDMA 6:1, True HD 5:1

View Posttonyjg, on 05 April 2013 - 11:02 AM, said:

go on... we all know that you LOVE 3D these days :) (In any case TOP GUN 3D was lousy - far far too grainy)
Don't agree at all with this comment.

My better half and I really enjoyed watching this post conversion.
Some grain ....yes, but not too much and the 3D was extremely well done. Flying scenes especially - looked incredibly dimensional - as if they'd been shot natively in 3D. Terriffic colour too, along with excellent black levels.
There was visual detail that we had never noticed before, and having owned this in multiple formats, it really surprised us.
The audio was another thing though.
We both heard so much extra information. Waves in the back ground at Charlie's house, ambient sounds at the airfield and the score was full and rich.
Funnily enough, only the missile/explosion scenes were a bit "light on", though the zooming and wooshing from speaker to speaker during the dog fight scenes was great.
We listened (by default) to the True HD soundtrack, but my amp showed it as 7:1 :logik:
All channels firing beautifully.  It was sooo good, I didn't even try the DTS track until after the credits.

FILM: 3.8/5
3D PQ: 4/5
AQ: 4.6/5

Corny dialogue and a lame/predictable story-line, cannot keep this film from being iconic and thoroughly entertaining. Good 80's stuff!

This is probably not a film for the general demographic of this forum, but this presentation is fabulous and worthy of a purchase - if not for yourself, then for close ladies in your life.

Sumptuous costume design and "fairytale - england of old" settings abound in this exceptional adaptation of Jane Austen's novel.
The PQ is sooo good. Color, depth and especially black levels, are spot on. Only a few scenes (including the start and end credits) display some softness. The bulk of the film is rich in detail. There is so much information for the eye to take in.
The AQ is understated and the emotional score never takes over from the peaceful settings and period feel.

FILM: 4.2/5
PQ: 4.5/5
AQ: 4/5

I think this is only available in Europe ATM. Get your orders in now for Mothers Day :)

Spiderman, is it reboot? It's not really Spiderman 4?

Had time to do a rewatch last night and realised that I hadn't written a review after the first watch.

The Amazing Spiderman - UK release (via Amazon.co.uk) (marked as Region Free)
VQ: - 4.5 very good quality video, as to be expected from this recent a release.  Some of the CG wasn't what I would call "state of the art", but not distracting.
AQ: - 4.5 decent LFE, nice use of the sides for fly pasts etc, plenty of action with wall rattling explosions and crashes. I personally found the music score, well I didn't actually find a music score.
Story: - 4.0 An OK telling of familiar (especially for a Marvel comics collector) story, unfortunately no real character development, far more geeky (my terminology) Peter Parker from Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone was more than OK, liked the support from Sally Field and Martin Sheen (Yes, I'm also a West Wing nut).
Summary: - Overall an OK reboot.  Unless you're a collector of all things Marvel, probably best to limit to a rent.

Cheers
Gary
