I recorded At the Movies ABC1 29/08/2012 22:10 to 22:40 and hear no audio at all.

I recorded Scott and Bailey ABC1 24/08/2012 and initially thought there was no audio but after a while a male voice-over describing the show commenced and continues from time to time when scenes change. e.g. the voice read out the show title as displayed on the screen, then  later said "Nadia attacks Rachel" then a bit later " Alice whacks Fred" etc.  There is no dialogue from the cast nor background sound.

There have been no such problems with other channels and I have recorded hundreds of shows before this.

I use DV Scheduler for recordings.  It's "Channel Settings" for all channels are the same ie. on default.

Any ideas anyone please?

PS  I've just checked a recording on ABC1 now and again there's no audio!!!

ABC1 has two audio streams now.  In the past it had two (AC3 and MPEG) then it was reduced to MPEG only now there are two MPEG audio streams.  One contains the normal audio whilst the other contains audio descriptions.  The audio descriptions are for the blind and only contain something when the normal audio does not give sufficient hints as to what is going on in the picture.

There's a few possibilities with what you are hearing.  Your recording program may only be recording one audio stream - the description one.  Your recording program is recording both audio streams but your player program is playing the description one.

Programs such as VLC will let you select alternate audio streams from the drop menu (if it detects them).  You could also try analysing the recording with project-x or tsreader (if its a cut down transport stream) to see what audio is actually there.

And please report this to the ABC e.g. through the contact details listed here.

It's currently on trial until the end of the month (so nearly over), and part of the reason for running a trial is to determine how much of a problem it causes for various TVs, STBs, computer tuners, etc. If there's no complaints, they'll assume it worked perfectly!

Edit: I thought it was just running for 4 weeks, but it seems they're running it for 13.

Thankx DrP & Malich.   I'm pretty sure DVScheduler can be set for ABC1 to cope.   I am reporting to the ABC right away.

Further to this I have a couple of work-arounds now with programs I am familiar with.

I have a Nebula/DigiTV tuner and its software records ABC1 with the main dialogue sound track.

The other workaround is to use VideoRedo. I use it routinely anyway, but to fix this specific problem you simply load the recording, then click its Tools and Streams. There's an audio stream selector and if you click the down arrow you can select the alternative you want, then do any edits you may want and click Save AS.

At present DVScheduler has nothing to help, but this may be improved in the future.

CORRECTION
I was in contact with the ever helpful developer of DVScheduler and previously I had not explained the issue clearly.
There IS a solution in DVScheduler and I quote
" in Channel Setting you can also remove the
unwanted audio track by using "Exclude these PIDs". Do a channel scan
to see which PID is what "
My scan shows PIDs as 650 and 653.

I am an even bigger fan of DVScheduler now. I urge others to try it (it's FREE) then if you too are impressed, DONATE.

I had this problem not so long ago. IIRC I got round it by changing the soundtrack number / subtitle track. I do believe that the sound is always recorded but it is possible that the playback for some reason selects the secondary soundtrack. Have a look through your PVR's manual for changing soundtracks and / or subtitles.
