Yes, that would be my first guess also, but guessing isn't knowing... ;)   It's the same as assuming, and you know what they say about people who assume... :ahappy:

Sorry that the forums display greys out some, the second line of the heading which clearly says Audio Visual guys, but you've worked it out. Just AUD$25,000 will get you one!

Here is the Sony web site for all the story on this machine..... http://www.sony.com....ct/vpl-vw1000es

Maybe Sony will produce a new elitist disc format to make it a worthwhile purchase ?

So I got  short tour today of this PJ.while watching Ironman in 4 dimension bum kicker seats with full swivel and tilt, fun stuff if you haven't done it before.

She's black, about double the physical size of a normal Home HT PJ.(BenQ or Pana) On the top side left edge is a rebated panel for all the connections reminiscent of a movie theater system, A large circular aperture at the front is closed off by a pair of motorised sliding doors for lens protection when not in use.

Watching the movie one is amazed at the extra clarity & brightness it provides, standing up close its not possible to identify any individual pixels on curved fixed 140" screen. Switching between 1080 and 4K modes while a static pic of say  a head, allows an easy vision of the differences on view and the best way I can describe this is akin to sharpening the focus as more detail just jumps of the screen in 4K mode.

Contrast is very good and mixed colours in fast action shots are carried off brilliantly, you should see when the racers cars are cut in half....

Overall would I buy it? well naturally I would, can I afford it ?  not yet.

Now if I get enough serious EOI's on this I can say for sure we can get up a Group buy having cleared it with AV.

Two were sold today just off their specs alone and that leaves just the demo version left in Oz I'm informed, plenty of serious interest from big name entertainment guru's around this one.

I'm in depending on price.

So what is the GB price and what commitment is required to secure that price?

As I mentioned there isn't any left in Oz for sale so prices will be based upon next shipment costs which I don't have at present sorry, It will to a great degree depend upon the uptake here on the EOI then GB Bbar. If we get say 5 buyers then its reasonable to assume a fair discount but I'm not committing us to anything until I can get some idea of numbers = discount, I'm sure you understand that.  Thank you though for your expression lets hope your not the last though....

No worries. Surprised though that they have this big event and then say sorry, can't sell you one as we don't know what we will be selling them for yet!

5 is a small number and should be achievable. When you say 'it is reasonable to assume a fair discount' ; what % off RRP have you been given as a 'fair discount'; or is being suggested as fair and reasonable.

I guess I am saying are we looking closer to 10% or 25% ?

Current RRP is 24,999. Are they saying RRP may change in the near future or that their costs may vary due to exchange rate fluctuations and other considerations and hence so may the discount they will offer?

Will say I am confused as to 9 of 10 for 2D as the PQ there is supposedly brilliant with the 4k upscaling ?

The Sonys native contrast ratio is far from class leading so 2D performance will always be compromised.
From the information and pictures I have seen the upscaling and sharpening system used is quite basic and can be done better externally.

I'm informed that Sony has only reasonably small margins on these so expect to only loose a bit off these in a GB but that's a lot of free blurays....
RRP will remain at $24995 or so for the foreseeable future .............  or until some else turns up the wick.... There are some grey imports about too with no warranty from Sony be aware..... Getting another viewing this morning with 709er  on board so we'll probably get more info again then....

The Sony's have faster chips so motion handling would be superior to JVC's, it's suited to bigger screens(120"-150"). Being a SiFi fan and requiring good black levels without brightness compression, to be used with a very modest screen size, I would lean toward the JVC.

With September around the corner, RED rattling their Laser Sabres, Sony having laser modules since 2010, Panasonic to release a Laser/Led projector soon...............may be prudent to see what's around the corner.

No doubt the Sony is a terrific projector and it's first 4K consumer offering, 4k BluRay specs are yet to be finalised and the Sony may not be able to handle the spec without a board upgrade.....but it is in the pipeline according to AVS.

If one had cash to splash.......why the heck not?!!

Suspect you are right and may be smarter to wait a few months and see what happens as 20-25% should be obtainable if conditions are right which would translate into $19-20 AUD
