Thanks Chris,

If i go with the 130" 16:9 which is almost the same width a 125" scope, the scope image would be the same size but with black bars top and bottom AFAIK, then i'll add some masking. I'm in Pakenham!

Off Topic, club rego with HSV/HDT? I used to take it to the drags and loved Easternats when it was at Sandown but i've hardly driven it the last few years :( got other things to spend money on!

You're correct.  By installing a 16:9 screen, your image width will remain the same, only the height will change.  It's the opposite for a scope screen - the height is the same, but the width varies, which is the basis for scope in the first place.

Rego is with the BCOAA.  We FINALLY got them to introduce it, after a lot of negative resistance, but there's a tonne of cars on the scheme now.  I've also noticed a LOT more old school cars on the road with this new scheme.  It's awesome!  My rego went from $560 to $66 a year.  I get to drive it whenever I want for whatever reason I want for up to 45 days a year.  A 90 day permit only costs around $116, which is well and truely worth it!  There's heaps of clubs that offer the scheme, so something to consider...

Cheers,

Chris

Thanks for clarifying that image size guys. I've got some thinking to do, buying the x30 and projecting onto a wall would be the best way for sure.

Chris, I'll have to google that as I looked into club rego not long ago and it didn't seem worth the hassle.

Well i went against everything suggested :D

Been pulling my hair out trying to decide which screen and ended up going the biggest scope i could fit which is 125". I would have gone the 16:9 but with standard height ceilings it left me with no room for speakers and furniture ect so had to compromise. Putting the screen up against cornace would have made viewing uncomfortable with my low couch. I'll probably move seating in to about 3 meters so 16:9 isn't too much of a let down and have the screen mounted as low as i can.

I jumped on the screen now as OzTS has a 20% off special on. I also noticed that as of this month JVC as introduced a factory 2 year warranty on projectors in Australia, will be buying that as soon as i sort some other things.

Thanks for everyone's help so far :)

Good work!
You'll love the scope screen.  Scope format is brilliant, and what you'll experience is exactly what 'scope is all about compared to 16:9.

Congrat's!  Don't forget to put some pics up to show us.  As a guide, your eye level when seated should be about level with the bottom 1/3 mark of the screen.

Cheers,

Chris

Thanks Chris,

I'll post some pics once set-up. I know what i'm like and if im not happy i'll end up selling it and going 16:9 anyway :D

Anyway, looking forward to getting the projector and audio gear.

Hi all. I am new to the forum. Also in the market for projector and screen. Been eyeing the benq w7000. I can fit a 120" screen comfortably on the wall and room is 4.6m long. Viewing will be around 4.2m from screen.

Can the w7000 throw this distance on this size comfortably ?
I have run the calcs on projector central but have no idea what the ideal distance and screen size is. Any help would b appreciated.

The W7000 needs about 4.3m from the lens to the screen to fill a 120" 16:9 screen using the projector central calculator.  The projector is about 32cm deep, so even using a right angle HDMI connection you're going to be a few cm short if the room is exactly 4.6m long.  An Epson TW9000 has slightly more flexible optics and will be fine.

A typical 120" 16:9 screen has a viewing area about 1.488m high.  The rule of thumb is about 3 times image height, so 4.2m is a reasonable option.  Note, when viewing cinemascope movies, only 75% of the screen height will be filled (black bars top and bottom), so you could consider sitting a little closer if these make up most of your viewing.  In any event, you can always try projecting on a wall until you're comfortable with screen size / seating position - it's very much a matter of personal preference.

Thanks very much quark. The length is 4.670m so that extra 7cm may help? It seems pretty tight. Is that at a zoom of x1?

The Epson tw9000 is a lot dearer though.

I don't know about the cinema scope screen or 16:9. I was just goin to go 16:9 as that is most common on media?

I plan to watch sport, tv, movies and game on the projector. So what do you think is best?

With 4.67m you'll squeeze it in with a cm or two to spare.  The good thing about being at the back of the room is that you have the choice of ceiling mount or high shelf mount.

You'll need to use a right angle HDMI adaptor to avoid bending the cable - there's a few varieties and the correct one will be determined by where you're running your cable from.

I'd recommend you stay with a 16:9 screen - was pointing out the 'scope movie issue in respect of how far you sit from the screen.

Make sure you / family have a look at a DLP projector (preferably a W7000) before you buy - some people see rainbow effects, even with the higher speed colour wheels of modern DLPs.

Thanks again quark for your help. Ye 120" screen seems to be a bit of a stretch. Would it be better if I went a smaller screen size say 100" or 110". It will require less room to throw right? I will have to view some DLPs to make sure I don't see any rainbows.

If you're looking at sitting 4.2m away then I wouldn't be in any rush to go smaller than 120".  The W7000 is more than bright enough to light up the screen in eco mode.

Try projecting on a wall for a few weeks before you settle on the screen.

I sit about 3.9m from a 130" scope screen, but YMMV.

Archiemoses, I agree with Quark. Setup yr projector and project it on a wall and try different sizes until you find one that your happy with.
