Hi guys,

I am wandering is it possible to rent a frequency from the multiplexes and start a new radio station, DAB+ only. I have found a niche and I am pretty sure it will go well is sales. Any ideas?

Cheers,
Zaggy

I think the only reason Australian radio stations went digital in the first place was the promise that they would be protected from any further competition for many years to come. There is a large market out there being totally ignored by commercial radio in this country but no hope of things changing until this silly embargo on new licences expires at some point in the future. Even then who's to say that we dont just get another crop of teenie stations after all the industry is very good at playing follow the leader.

6 years, isn't it? But I still believe there is a "back door" somewhere, somehow... FTA Radio market is a joke here, for ref. Soft Radio 91.5 and MTR... ABC and SBS have the weakest signal, but occupying most of the channels. Catch 22, as it seems...

Radio Sport National are the only Melbourne operator not using their whole allocation, so contacting them with a proposal would be your best chance. While there's a 6 year moratorium of new entrants, that is only for the 'spare' multiplex space, which was auctioned to the existing licences (including RSN), so once the entrant rule is removed, there's still no spectrum to do it, so you'd need to work with an existing operator.

zaggyd,
You will still need a licence http://www.acma.gov....D_IND_LIC_ABOUT
The commercial DAB+ transmitters  are all owned by a subsidiary company of http://www.commercialradio.com.au/
