Hi all i am quite dissapointed as i have gone through my 800 blu ray collection only to find approx 40 titles not having hd audio. Titles i would never have expected like mission impossible trilogy, swordfish, oceans trilogy heck even training day. I never thought to check these as being hd bluray never thought i should. If i wanted dolbly digital i would buy dvd. This is an absolute joke can they even get away with it. Even the last samurai is dd.  Can sonone please explain to me why this allowed.

Regard
Stevie b

suprising and hard to understand isnt it steve ? just carelessness on part of the studio I think. maybe they will use it as reason to bring out a re-release with hd audio ?

unfortunately they mandated blu-ray with only either DD5.1/DTS or LPCM

http://www.blu-ray.com/faq/

rest unfortunately all optional ! :(

so yeah just taken the easy way out, and even these great releases havent bothered to give us any better ! :( boo hiss !

ps below website a good reference (admittedly only for us releases) to show what audio available on titles

there are also some which make no reference to having lossless audio, yet actually do have lossless audio and in some cases havea lossy track as the default track.

Yes that is the case thats why i had to insert each disc and check it. I had found quite a few that had lossless audio but didnt have it on tje case.

This should not be allowed. You are buying hd you should get hd. Now i have to try and sell these 40 or so movies.

Genrally older titles will have this problem. Pre-these audio codecs being the norm and people having the ability to actually take advantage of them. The MI series has now been redone with HD audio and im sure all others will also get a new treatment at some point.

Other anomalies - some BDs do not start playing with the DTS HDMA or Dolby TrueHD by default. You have to select it from the menu e.g. The Dark Knight

Probably some were a rebellious FU act by the studios that were dragged kicking and screaming from HD DVD to Bluray ;)

Cheers

i don't know if anybody else has noticed but blu ray discs which are region 1 tend to offer a better selection of HD soundtracks.
i have a region 1 (region free) copy of Ghost Protocol and the soundtrack is 7.1 dolby true hd.....i have noticed over the last few years that region free discs i have gotten from the states tend to have better soundtracks than the region b releases......
i hope i am wrong because otherwise we are getting a seriously raw deal...

I have to agree with you. I import alot from the uk and have had the same problem. Even the underworld series was not hd audio. Looks as though i will be buying most of my future releases from the u.s

I'm a little curious here Stevie.B, why did you need to load the disks to determine if they had HD audio tracks? Hadn't it been obvious when you played them ?

There's plenty of labeling errors on packaging, mostly around the audio tracks.  There's a thread dedicated to it.

Why would you sell them?

Surely the difference isn't that massive you'd rather not watch the movies at all?!

Most of these tracks aren't vanilla either, they are 640kbps and though disappointed with the few I have that don't have HD audio I would not sell them until such time as they are released in HD and as pointed out they are not that bad, Lord of War is a recent one that springs to mind and is now available with HD audio........

other than that I just tend to ensure that I have read a review that includes the audio as part of before I purchase..................

Yes i would rather sell them and get a better release.  There is quite a difference i think. Its also the fact that knowing its not hd audio kind of ruins the movie experience.

But what if there isn't a better release available? I wouldn't assume that the US/UK releases are any better.

I know what you mean about the "knowing" thing, it can be tough to get past sometimes.  But you really do have to listen to what is there rather than think about what might not be.

I've listened to enough shitty HD audio tracks to know the quality of the mix is more important than the codec used.

Quite right and this was the case in DVD's day as well. This is the reason I spent a fortune (At the time) importing Region 1 DVD's and why 95% of the BD's I buy are Region 1 (Amazon). I have been bitten too many times by sub-standard Region B audio (Some of the differences are glaring especially in the LFE channel). I remember back in the day the only way you could get DTS for "The Crow" was to import the Region 1 DVD. Same went for "Hell Freezes Over" - The Eagles concert (DTS).

Do what I do and play it safe and simply buy Region 1. It's one of the best reasons to modify your BD Player for Region Free.

Edit - And as per what Yorac said I tend to read reviews for the Audio section prior to purchase (Widescreen magazine, AVS Forum, Home Theatre Forum).

Your quite correct, this is why alot of us only buy US copies... :)
