okay... Stupid question time... My only experience with streaming is from iTunes

The only BD drives we have at home are in our Oppo-93 and a cheapy Samsung player in the bedroom. Our computer is a current spec iMac which only supports DVD. Would I need to also purchase a external BD drive for the iMac or can I connect the oppo up somehow to rip directly to (for example) a Dune HD D1 with 2Tb HDD installed?

Thinking one of these might be a better solution for us than the ATV we have which always drops it's connection to iTunes. Currently it's only used or our CD collection but thinking I might join the 21 century and stream everything. Apparently the drop out isuues with the ATV is a common issue with no known solution.

I can't think of any easy way to use the oppo - other than to remove the transport and put it into your mac somehow.

I am not an iPerson, but you will need to rip the BD Iso's first (using a computer) then transfer them to the Dune HDD second.

I am pretty sure the Dune connected to a BD Drive would not let you rip directly .... but it might be worth some googling to see.

you cant use a player to rip in any way I know

you would need an external drive such as this

http://www.macfixit....d&productId=404

youd need dvdfab blu-ray copy
http://www.dvdfab.com/blu-ray-copy.htm
to rip the blu-ray to either a blu-ray iso that youd play off the dune which is what I do. or if wanting to rip to format for iphone, ipad or ATV style format can do as well with dvd fab blu-ray ripper,
http://www.dvdfab.co...-ray-ripper.htm
but I wouldnt be expecting it to blu-ray quality and be streaming somehow. personally have found working off connected hard drives the best form if wanting to play back blu-ray or DVD iso files which are in original form and quality and playback as the disc would.

Yeah 95% for HT room duties directly from a media player. I might put some movies on the iPad down the track for the kids to watch in the car but I would never watch movies that way unless stuck in an airport or plane.

I'll keep 1 eye on streamers but as I'm out of HDMI inputs on the Onkyo I'll probably wait until I can justify a new avr or pre/power option. I might get a external BD player for the iMac anyway & play around via the oppo streaming feature for now... as clunky as it is...

There is NO comparison between the Oppo and the dune when it comes to streaming .... The Oppo is useless in this regard.

Absolutely agree. I ran both oppo and Cambridge after that in that role. Something like the dune or other media players are in another league.

I know I've tried my music collection through it but I don't really want to go down the route of hdmi switches to get a streaming device in my set up. My equipment is hidden and controlled via RF Harmony 900 so I might just put that in the too hard basket for now.

Can you install a hard drive full of media (format ntfs) into  a Dune H1 or does the dune have to format it first.

thanks

Yes, that's exactly what I did, you can use ntfs.  You can also mount it over you network in win7?

If you are going to do this I suspect you are best to put the system files on a USB drive, as has been previously discussed in this thread.

I have the version with the HDD dock ... I simply use HDDs formatted in NTFS, dump files on them from windows then load hem into the dock.

P.s your transfer rate will be highest if you use sata as opposed to usb

I'm going to order a D1, strange that the specs on the Dune site say that only the B1 can pass through HD audio. Good to know it does SBS MKV 3D as well, although i don't like 3D its good to know its there if i need it.

Seems these are the most reliable when it comes to media players that can do HD audio, the PCH and Xtreamer have some other issues.

the D1 passes HD audio day in day out. no probs there. some just get a bit confused wiht my initial comments in this thread but missed my later comments on a setting mentioned in the manual that needs to be selected to allow it to accept bitstream signal. I think you'll be quite pleased, but be sure to post back, look forward to reading how you find it :)

If you have an imac, an ext bluray drive is a must, then I just use toast titanium to rip image and then disk utility to convert it to iso

I've got dvdfab as well, I know it can rip but can it create iso files?

Is the only difference between the H1 and D1 the ability to put a hdd in one. I see they both do 3D, can they do 3D iso's?
