thought I'd place an order on the Dune HD smart D1,

http://dune-hd.com/h...d-smart-d1.html

was a bit of a toss up whether to get the hard drive only H1 or D1 which has the display.

but then thought for my lounge room setup the drive bay looks a bit too server style. and its not like it allows for drives to be hot swapable.

The D1 with the display looks a bit more like av gear. but if the display annoys me it will soon have some black tape over it ! hehe

for starters I'll just use a hard drive plugged into it via usb. down the track might look at putting a drive inside the D1

getting from hdcity,
http://hdcity.com.au...d-smart-d1.html

will post back when turns up. my main use will be iso playback for dvds and blu-rays. but will explore while at it what can do as media player for other things :)

keen to hear if anyone else here with one of these or one of the other dune hd smart units appear to be pretty well made devices and for the outlay though perhaps on the pricey side thought give it a shot.

It does look pretty good but a little surprised that it doesn't do 3D (everything else seems to want to)... I am keen to know if it can do multi sub mkvs and whether the subs can be moved and or enlarged... The (*) in the specs under ISO BRs doesn't give an explanation... hopefully there are no conditions.

I know it does multi subs, but don't know about moving them or enlarging them ..... I think I noticed something about changing their fonts through, which should mean size can be altered.

I;m sure you'll be happy.

thanks chops appreciate the feedback. hopefully turns up next day or so. I'll just use my external hard drive to start with plugged in via usb. I read something that if put a hard drive inside the unit can get a bit warm as has no fans (a good thing ! ) and to select drives carefully green drives etc.

what drives are you using chops and how have found them so far speed/noise heat wise while working inside the unit ? am keen to pop a hdd inside as well one day so curious any feedback on what have found works well.

the great thing with this smart system I beleive you can also daisy chain the add on drive units ?

http://dune-hd.com/h...ion-module.html

only $99 ! maybe would save you disc swapping ?

http://hdcity.com.au...-extension.html

though dont know how that works in practice. might be better to do the hard drive swap vhs tape style as your doing hehe.

Who knows when dune will start using the latest sigma chip Mjr ?  If you want reliability dune beats most - himedia etc :)

Ive played sbs 3d bluray rips and they look very good.  If Al wants to do 3d he can stream sbs 3d  and the good thing is their 1/2 the size

Jumping ship! (HiMedia 900)

by DiabloZoe, Sunday, January 15, 2012, 07:22 (134 days ago)

While the 900 seems like the latest and the greatest I was able to pick up a Dune Due and out the box it was 10x greater then the 900b. While I have some 3d ISO's I switched them over to MKV sbs and the 3d is perfect. It did not look good on the 900. To many bugs AMD he worst support from HiMedia is just not the way to go!!

I have used the free 30 day trial of dvdfab copy to try a few Al but with the 2 1/2 frames making up the 1080x1920 frame embedded subtitles go wacko  :turned: . They will fix this hopefully or I could be doing something wrong :twitch: Dont know if anyhd handles mvc codec yet ;it was coming they say :ike: Glad I still have the iso firmware on the oppo so no need to muck around ..

Half the fun setting up a new component ; enjoy.

I can recommend using YADIS to organise your movie collection.  Once set up it is very pleasing to the eye (and the family).

Will Yadis run with just a NAS and the Dune or is a PC needed to be running the software?

got a "fatal error" "bran error" it says when click on the link. seems like the site is down, will try again later. presume this is some sort of skin. or software. but wondering how get it onto the dune ? or is it something for the computer ?

got an email from hdcity saying they were hoping to ship today so hopefully dune turns up next day or so :)

It works for me :
yaDIS (yet another Dune Indexer and Skinner) has been developped in order to provide a fast, light and simple way to index and skin a movie and tv show library on HDI Dune multimedia players.

Main features :

• Compatible with Dune, Mede8er and TViX media players
• Movies and TV-Shows management
• Handling of several source folders
• Automatic scan of movies and tv shows (manual search available)
• Movie information in 18 languages (depends on TMDb content)
• TV-Shows information in 18 languages (depends on TheTVDb.com content)
• Multi-part movies support
• Detection of the technical informations of your media
• Manual editing of movie and tv show information
• Manual editing of movie and tv show artworks
• Index with 10 categories (recently added, genres, actors, directors, countries, years, ...)
• Manage a unique interface for all your medias even they are distributed on several sources
• Customizable Dune interface with template management
• Launch your medias on the Dune from yaDIS (requires a compatible firmware)
• 18 languages available for program's GUI.

For movies, yaDIS uses the themoviedb.org or Ciné-Passion databases to retrieve movie information, covers & fanarts.

For german and dutch languages, ofdb.de and moviemeter.nl are used.

For TV Shows, yaDIS uses thetvdb.com database to retrieve TV-Shows information, banners & fanarts.

Hi Al,

a 2TB Green HDD gets warm, but not hot - about 45-50 degrees .... I have noticed that Green drives don;t last as long though.  I have a batch of 1.5 TB ones that are now throwing up errors and talking forever to read, so I replace them at tax time every year to make sure .... well truth is I replace the data ones in the pc, then use those old ones for media for a year, then retire them with the data on them (in case I ever need to revisit the past). The point being I don;t keep them in service for more than 2 years and the reality is HDD's a cheap enough now days to be mega careful like this.

Try this tutorial Al links back sorta to mjr's ;

http://www.mediasmar...0-for-the-dune/

bit more follow up for the latest version 1/2 way down the page vvv here ; you need some system storage [maybe a thumbdrive] on the dune to hold the exported yadis info I gather ?

If you like iPhone control you can also try Zappiti but it does cost money.

got it, setup hooked up. very impressed with the unit.

one major hang up cant get it to pass through dts-hdma for blu-ray iso

or for that matter even dd5.1 for DVD iso

chops is there some trick to this. the manual flicked through it could not be more brief !

have tried selecting audio using the remote incase thats it. but doesnt seem to be the case. even if there is a dts-hdma 5.1 track its only coming though as 2.0 pcm over hdmi !
What has been the opinion of power users regarding media playback capabilities ?

Do Dune players do HD-Audio bitstreaming from different containers (BD-ISO,mkv,m2ts ) ?

Yup' date=' bitstreaming from all containers with no issues[/QUOTE']

noting in thread above it clearly says bitstreams hdaudio from bd iso, so wondering what am I doing wrong ?

ok a bit of a more comprehensive online manual here,

as opposed to the few pages repeated in multiple languages you get with the unit.

http://dune-hd.com/online_manual/

time to go searching if there is a bitstream vs pcm option or something suspect thats all it is !

yes as thought, from the online manual

http://dune-hd.com/o...al/#setup-audio

Quote

This section of the setup menu allows to set the connection type of relevant audio equipment.
Digital audio output mode: you may switch the mode of digital optical output:

 • PCM (Pulse Code Modulation, forced decoding): a mode in which the original sound track, i.e. Dolby Digital or DTS, is converted (decoded) to the Pulse Code form. It is supported by decoders of virtually any up-to-date audio equipment. But this mode is only recommended in case your AV receiver does not support full decoding of multichannel sound of above formats, or the audio subsystem of a TV set connected via HDMI cable is used instead of a home theater system.
 • Original (Bitstream): a mode in which the original sound track, i.e. Dolby Digital or DTS, is transmitted to an external decoder in its original, encoded, form. Refer to the "Transmission of Digital Audio to AV Receiver" section. HDMI audio: turn on and off transmition of audio signal via HDMI.

Blu-ray audio (for models having support for Blu-ray):

 • When set to "Best quality", and the "Digital audio output mode" set to "Bitstream", the primary audio track is sent to both S/PDIF (digital audio output) and HDMI as a bitstream not depending on the presence of secondary audiotrack; secondary audio/video functions ("PiP") are disabled.
 • When set to "PiP support", secondary audio/video functions are enabled, and, to support these functions, the player is allowed to use the "decode" mode instead of the "bitstream" mode on digital audio outputs (so the audio quality may suffer, e.g. stereo PCM may be sent to the S/PDIF output, and multichannel PCM may be sent to the HDMI output).

ps looking at video mode setting in the manual that is really unclear. I found my unit set on 720p50hz for some reason. have put it on auto(edid) not sure what to do re auto frame rate as that appears to be diabled by default to. setting it to 24/50/60hz  says its not supported for auto (edid) mode. so have left disabled for now !

re the display on the D1 I really dont mind it. Its same size as that on the cambridge 751bd player so quite readable from viewing position. you can switch what get shown on their I like that it shows the elapsed time while watching an iso of movie for instance. when the unit itself is switched off it has a small red light. so not finding annoying at this stage. as mentioned of does annoy me some electrical tape soon sort it out hehe.

it does that automatically when setup and has the latest firmware. all working as should. audio wise streaming hdaudio so happy about that once selected off the default settings. but yes still unclear video output settings. and also I notice the gui/skin is pretty plain vs what they show on say side of the box ? wondering if that is some custom skin as doesnt appear to be in the list of skins available in "appearance" settings.

Hi Al, the video processing is pretty good, I run mine at 1080p 50 hrtz.  If you hit the red button (I think) on the remote it will change the skin - there are around 6 pre loaded and I think you can download others.
