I have pretty basic satellite receiver with 1 component output , 2 AV ( i.e RCA ) outputs. What the simplest and cheapest device may be suggested for recording this satellite receiver output . My browsing Internet shows that all cheap PVR(s) seem to be able to record from its tuner only. Would be possible for some existing PVRs to set time to record from its component input ?l

Most HDD PVRs dont have AV (composite) inputs, but some do.
Most HDD/DVD Combo Recorders and DVD Recorders do have at least one AV input, which can usually be set to timer record.
Most relatively modern VCRs (ie. 90s/00s) can also timer record from AV in.
Im not aware of any device that will record from component in though (except pc capture cards). Though there might be a few specific models of other devices that do.
If you are watching FTA satellite, you could upgrade to a dual tuner satellite receiver. Though this would require extra cabling/new LNB/etc. if its not already cabled for a dual tuner device.

As you've noted almost all PVRs don't record the output of another device. The few that do are expensive. You need to search for DVDR recorders.
The question if you need a harddrive recorder. A DVDR that only records to DVDs is under $100 however its not great for much more than a show or two a week...
One with a harddrive starts costing more. Second hand might be a good option. This looks good for $75 - The DVD bit isn't working but you don't need that.

Where would one find ANY DVD recorder without HDD nowadays? A friend asked me to look for one, which has been a futile exercise up until now

Fits the bill. Can't speak to reliability. If you're happy with the $270 then its what you want and quite a bit more.

Mikhail, What sat service are you trying to record? You might be better off buying a satelliter receiver with PVR recording option.
