We recently bought a house which has a ht/bar room approximately 10m by 5m, the HT part will be just over half the length of the room. It already has a 100 inch projector screen & an old Toshiba projector. I currently have a Denon AVR 590 so would just like to spend $4000 on front, centre,  surround &  sub. I live near Campbelltown NSW. Can you guys recommend some good Hi Fi stores in Sydney.  Any suggestions on what to buy (brands etc) within my budget would be appreciated. Thanks

Eastwood hifi would certainly be on the list.  Whilst the budget of $4k for the speakers is a good one, the AVR might have to be next on the list for upgrading.

Eastwood Hifi (ironically located at Dural) is one of the preferred shops in Sydney for good deals.

For the $$ you're looking at you will likely get better bang for your buck if you look at some of the good second hand stuff in the for sale section.
Have a look at this thread for a nice set of Focals.
http://www.dtvforum....l=&fromsearch=1

While he's recently pulled the sale I think he would be willing to reconsider. RRP on that lot was ~$8-10K I think......

Agree with Dave, it would also be worthwhile considering an upgrade to the AVR when funds allow.

Yeah, my speakers are still for sale if you're interested bolo. Happy to demo them for you at Kirrawee... RRP on them is over $8K.

As for shops closer to home, you could try Sturmans in wollongong. About 35-40 minutes easy drive from campbelltown.

Thanks guys for your help... Might have to check out Eastwood Hifi..

Gutty when are you able to demo them? I'm free at nights... Would those speakers work ok with my Denon?

Cheers

I can demo them any time day or night. Just let me know when suites... If it's going to be tonight, be sure to give yourself enough time to get home for the footy ;) PM if you're interested and i'll give you my address and number etc.

Yes, they will work with your denon, they're a reasonably easy speaker to drive. But as others have said, an amp upgrade would be ideal to get the best out of them.

A few tips when shopping at the above  North shore emporium

Ware your best togs,   borrow a 5 series Bemma, and find a fashion model to walk in with.
And you might just find someone who will bother to talk to you.

Or roll up in a rusty 1 tonner, in your working gear and Gum boots, and bring the Mother-in-Law.

Talk about  " pass go, and go directly to jail"

Go to Eastwood for good value, price and service

You'll not go wrong at Eastwood for price value and service

Do you care about aesthetics?

That's a large room you're average "hifi" speaker wont cut it. I'd get myself 5 of these the "H" version and a decent sub from somewhere. I use two of them for rears in a very large living space

Not at all. They have a very flat response, excellent off axis and have good HF fall-off.

The "H" version uses a good quality compression driver in the same vein (although not as good) as Procella, Seaton, JTR etc

Go and have a look at most of the high end rooms being build these days, very few (except the small ones) use speakers with dome tweeters.....the world has moved on

Edit: Did you bother to look at the site at all or just looked at it and thought "a mother wouldn't love that?" until you hear it sing:

Posted Image

I see very few "hifi" speakers that can do that.

Why do you think Econowaves have taken the DIY world by storm? thats because they're darn good and cheap - short of DIY'ing one, the QSC's are the next best thing.....if you can get your head around the way it looks (but my recommendation is buy a bigger AT screen and hide them behind)

If you like Plastic box's hanging on a nail good luck to you.

As for no one using Dome Tweeters, Tell that to Hi-end speaker manufactures .

I suggest you do a bit of research, before you make outrageous statements.
Then do a bit of a search, on peoples HT set-up's on here. or look here,

http://forum.audiogo....pl?vhome&1

Not a Plastic Box to be found.

Now I'm off for a Bex Powder and a good lie-down in
the sure hope I will recover from your comments.

Apologies to the thread starter, It would seem your thread has been
somewhat high-jacked

Really? interesting, well I guess these guys got it wrong - both compression driver based systems, oh look and one uses QSC which is pretty much the same tweeter...

http://www.electroni...e/insane_sounds

http://www.electroni..._garage_theater

Here's another....uses high power capable ribbons...not seeing too many domes

http://www.electroni..._theater_design

Peter M's new room.....Procella/compression drivers again....odd, why would he part with $'000's on those...

Do you actually understand what the above graph is showing you? ffs

OP - just be an informed buyer. Most "hifi" shops in Australia don't understand this stuff yet, we're a cottage industry for HT in this country. Best of luck with your project/purchase

Edit: Seaton is very popular on DTV......uses compression drivers

any brand sub would do bolo. if looking for some good quality sub without spending the earth the legend kurlo at $1500 or kurlette at $1k are beaut options.

re surrounds I'd stick to focals for a consistent sound all around.

these are the matching surrounds,

http://www.focal.com...us-sr-800-v.php

but ay focal standmount can be used and would work in pretty well.

Well worth checking those focals out, from reading Gutty's original ad sub and possibly surrounds are included. Certainly have a listen before you buy something else.
