Subwoofer Setting Help
Posted 22 May 2012 - 11:02 PM
I have :
Yamaha RX-V667 receiver
Front speakers are Jamo S606
Centre is Jamo S60
Sub is Jamo S300
Rears are ceiling speakers and can not remember what they are.
Fronts are set to Large
Centre and rears to small.
Could somebody please give me a guideline on what to set my receiver and sub too,on my receiver what should I set my Bass Cross over at and should I have xtra base on or off.
On the sub where should I set my cut off at(the dial is between 40Hz and 150Hz) and where should I set my phase(dial is between 0 and 180.) at.
I have messed about with various settings and just can not seem to get anything sounding right,I mainly watch DVDs,more action type movies and the system just seems to lack that punch during those times in the movs when you would expect those explosions moments to sound as they should.
Thanks for your time.

These are general rule-of-thumb settings. The YPAO setup should get all your speaker trims right (if, for example though, the sub trim is maxed out in the negative direction, the sub volume will be too high. Reduce it and recalibrate), then the speaker and crossover tweaks should get things sounding nice.
There should be a guide on AVSforum somewhere for YPAO guidelines,

The extra bass function will send LFE to your mains if they are large. Since your mains are large, both mains + sub will dish out LFE (provided extra bass is on). Basically you are bypassing the eq in the sub and letting the receiver manage your eq. I personally tried using the eq function of the sub Vs the receiver and found that the receiver did a better job overall (for movies at least) managing LFE. Once everything has been set up and you still need more LFE, crank up the gain on your sub till you are satisfied with the sound.
P.S - sub placement would be the other main factor in this piece so check the forums on sub placement techniques. Lost of info available

I intend to dedicate a day to resetting every thing up again,so that additional info will come in handy.

After much messing about I got the sub to come in nicely on granddaughters dvd,Nemo, later that night when I went to watch a movie via an external hard drive through the blu ray player,I could hear the sub working, but it sounded awfull, just this dullish bass noise in the background which became annoying in the end.
I suppose like a lot of people I am not conversant enough with it all and can not seem to find something on the net in the most simplest terms to make me think that is where I am going wrong. So I wll read and read again until I nail this thing.
Thanks again for the input.

Don;t try and guess at settings if you don;t understand them.
use the manual step by step in doing the YPAO setup.
There will also be options for things such as night mode, range compression, etc that it will explain what they are all about

messed about with it today, done some reading untill 3.00am last night and have worked it out enough, which was a lot better than before,I think my main problem was I had the volume cranked up too much and along with the settings not being close to good it made it sound horrid.
