Unfortunately this forum is dominated by a handfull of posters that are hell bent on criticising LCD- personally I have the Sony 55HX925 & am more than impressed with its quality.

Acknowledgement should be made that the top of the line LCD such as the HX925 are of a very high standard & not be brushed off as simply average LCD.

I have been a member of this forum since inception & have had some lively discussions over the years however I am spending the majority of my time in US forums as I am very disappointed with non balanced posts on this forum.

There is no perfect display device out there.

Well said mate.

Saw this Sharp 70" TV in US last Nov at Sears was selling @ $2499!

See its now at JB for $4200?, it was showing David Attenborough nature series, looked bloody awesome, and the set looks very thin to me.
I saw a Sharp 80" in a store in LA for only $5500, (I paid $4000 for my Pana 50" four years ago).... in March this year awesome picture.

I've heard rumours there *may* be a 80" Sharp arriving here later this year. Considering the 70" is at lead DOUBLE the price in Australia compared to US/UK, I expect nothing less for the 80" which would need a mortgage on the house..

Such a shame as all the other brands have chosen not to release anything larger than 64-65' in Australia so perhaps Sharp is milking the fact it is the only super large flat panel provider in Australia.

Owen, this question is a bit off thread, but do you have any comment on how Panasonic plasmas handle compression.   I don't think there are any arguments about Panasonic PQ, black levels, contrast with good quality video but a lot of the reviews (and indeed some in this forum) question the Panny with poorer quality stuff.  I was in HN the other day looking at GTs and VTs and definately notice a little bit of jagged edge on local terrestrial standard definition broadcasts.

I haven't compared the latest models but the E8000 Samsung handled free to air compression artefacts significantly better than the GT30 and ST30 Panasonic's in a side buy side evaluation I performed. I did not have access to the remotes so cant say how much the Panasonic could have been improved with adjustment. Sharpness and noise reduction settings can make a significant difference to performance.

I call them as I see them mate, top line LCD's are no match for mid range Plasmas, let alone the best Plasma's as far as I am concerned and the Sharp is not exactly a top performer as LCD's go.
There are fundamental differences in how Plasma and LCD's create an image, those differences are not quantified by specs or the tests performed for reviews, however they are visible to me and plenty of others.

Many people will have no problem with a good LCD and wont notice issues that would bother me, in fact I'm sure many will prefer the LCD look. As long as the individual ends up happy with what their choice its all good.

Most people recommend what they own, I own a Samsung LCD TV and dont recommend LCD's, I do recommend Plasmas yet have never owned one and likely never will. :logik:

Panasonic sell an 85" and a 103" Plasma in Oz.

Another question is, even if these high end Sony's are good HDTV's, are they even the equal of a Panasonic plasma that costs, $1200-$1400 less.
Conan on GEM is 8mbps 1440x1080i, but it looks extremely good on my 4yr old Panasonic plasma, and it certainly looks better than on my newer LCD, so I guess I'm having a hard time believing that a mid spec2012 Panasonic 50in for example, wouldn't be killer.

Not sure how a Sony LCD is relevant in a thread about a 70" Sharp, the 65" Sony is double the price and likely more expensive than the upcoming 80" Sharp.

As for the Panasonic Plasma's the ST, GT and VT are pretty much identical for performance after calibration which makes the ST excellent value, but only the 65" is comparable with the 70" Sharp.
Even though I'm no LCD fan I would take the 70" Sharp over any Plasma or LCD under 64", 50" just does not cut it.

Someone slagged you off for being anti-LCD, I was just pointing out that even "if" they're as good, they're still much more expensive.
46-50in TV's are still viable for smaller rooms, and I've lost interest in spending much time in the loungeroom just for the sake of a bigger TV.

The Sony is expensive for a 65" these days and almost certainly uses a Sharp panel, justifying the price is difficult given Sharps price-size advantage and the quality-price advantage of the Plasmas.

I'd be keen to hear more from people who ended up buying the 70" Sharp. I'm actually seriously considering it over the 64" Samsung plasma which is not too different in price ($2400aud at the moment vs. $3200aud for the 70" Sharp) because I don't care for smart tv or 3D, but I do like sheer size as my eyesight isn't spot on (I wear -0.5 glasses) and bigger size/immersion feeling is great for Xbox Kinect! I have a lot of light in my apartment.

I'll check out the E8000 again for the Samsung plasma but will probably go LCD. Besides, it's more power efficient :)
