Hey guys,
I'm looking for a 46" LED TV preferably without 3D. I have a budget of around $2k
I've looked at a recent sale on cheapbargains where the Samsung UA46ES5500 46" was around $1.3k.
Would you guys recommend the Samsung, or something else?

2K is a big budget for 46"LED
I picked up a 46" Sony HX800 on run out for $900 a couple of months ago
HX800 was superceded by HX820 this year
It also came with a 3D transmitter which gave me the option of 3D viewing
a comparable samsung to Hx series should be a D7000 or D8000 series, i think
so i would say 1.3K for sammy 5500 is a bit overprice

Samsung's TVs are always a bit high, but their TVs are good and they got the market.

The only TVs I could recommend as of now are Panasonic's plasma and LG's LED. Panasonic VT50 has pretty decent PQ in a sense that it's a plasma TV but they lack a lot of other handy features. You should definitely look at LG's LM series. They have the full-array LED with local dimming so the black levels are pretty insane on those.

Blacks can be very good on local dimming LCD's but the distortions associated with local dimming are not for everyone and they are less than ideal.
Dynamic lighting systems are no substitute for good native contrast.
LCD looks like LCD no matter how it is illuminated, it creates an image in a very different way to Plasma and those fundamental differences will always be there.
OLED will have more in common with Plasma than LCD
The ST and VT Panasonic's have the lowest black level in Plasma land but in some other important aspects of performance they are edged out by the E8000 Samsung Plasmas. So it depends on your priorities as the which is better.
LG-Philips hold the patents for IPS LCD technology which has the best colour and off axis viewing performance in LCD land, it also has about the worst native contrast ratio with about half the native contrast of Samsung or Sharp technology. Still an IPS panel combined with local dimming is a powerful combination worthy of consideration.
Having said that I struggle to see value in a an LCD that costs as much or more than a bigger and better Plasma.
