WIN has had about 1.5Mbit/sec of nulls in its transmission in Mackay QLD in the past.  Compared to any of the others this is quite large - SBS is less than 100kbit/sec of nulls, while the 2nd worst (assuming WIN is the worst) is about 300kbit/sec.  Should this additional waste of space come to Mackay, I wonder if WIN will task that 1.5Mbit/sec of wasted space to the exercise.

Hmm.  A quick look shows that there is now ~2.8Mbit/sec of nulls.

Not only is early morning TV splattered with infomercials and other outright ads, there is now two 24 x 7 channels packed with the crap.  Whilst I can believe there is sufficient money coming in to support one such channel, two of them?  It boggles the mind somewhat.

Perth 9 (owned by WIN) is callsign STW, a poster above has said theyve got it from Perth 9. Try 94 instead of 84 if you havent already. Being advertised on 9 Perth at this stage. But no channel as yet.

Wait until Southern Cross jump on the bandwagon, Ten's in a financial hole so it is no doubt coming.

Nine Melbourne have gone from about 300k of nulls to over 1Mbps of nulls since adding Extra. At the moment with the football on the allocations are a bit better than usual, but Gem is on 10Mbps, Nine on 4.8, Go! on 2.8 and Extra on 2. Though usually Gem is nearer 8Mbps, Nine a bit higher and occasionally Extra peaks above Go.

WIN don't have datacast licences yet, which certainly explains the lack of full service, but in my reading of the multichannel rules that makes WIN's test channel illegal (as there's no exemption under the channel limits that allows it). If you have a bit of time, there's nothing to lose making a complaint to ACMA about the potential technical breach (though there's always the chance ACMA are just late in updating their site).

I honestly don't mind Prime/Seven's channel (by comparison), there's a reasonable amount of community shows on there, a lot of stuff previously only on Channel 31 has found its way onto 4ME. And as a whole it has far less pure infomercial programming. Extra on the other hand is wall to wall paid advertisements followed by 7 hours of 'chat' television, the worst of the worst. I do hope for the sake of regional viewers WIN is at least doing its own ad channel rather than carrying Extra as is, or that the inclusion of WIN would improve the quality of the content on it. Considering these channels now seem inevitable from all the broadcasters, at least get them right.

The MPEG-2 demo loop is now running here too.  A quick look with tsreader shows WIN is still running about 1.5Mbit/sec of nulls.  I wonder why WIN has to maintain such a high rate of nulls compared to all the other networks.  Given that WIN and ABC share a playout centre and, presumably, therefore have access to the same standard of equipment, WIN should be able to achieve rates similar to ABC's 500 kbit/sec of nulls.  1 Mbit/sec may not seem like much but if it was given to WIN SD and/or GO! it would make a considerable difference to them.

WIN ~1.5 Mbit
ABC ~0.5 Mbit
7 QLD ~0.8 Mbit
SBS ~0.15 Mbit
SCA ~0.5 Mbit

Not enough space in the existing multiplex (9 is getting special permission under trial provisions to operate a special transmitter).

G'day,

I've been getting correspondance from people in Regional Victoria, that WIN has a channel 84 appearing as TBA

We all know it'll be "Extra" with more informercials

But, tonight, a random idea while this was in discussion, Channel Ten are probably next to release a channel, instead of a datacasting channel, how about something interesting, what ever happened to that idea of a music channel on Free to Air..... Nudge, Network Ten!

Ahh...was worth a try

Not until they are allowed to carry more than 2 multichannels. Datacasting is a loophole.

no luck with shepherd tv guide. shepherd has not even heard about it.

I think its a rebadged extra channel.

Im going to program it to start recording tommorow at between 5 am to 8 am just to see what it started off like.

Bet you its just info commericals that I will just be deleting.

Desprate pricks if its info commericals, what happened to running them thru the night.
