Weird question I know, but do Mystar HD boxes have a built in UHF modulator?  I ask because the online PDF instruction manual suggest it does but I can't work out how to enable it.

A bit of background:  I'm in the middle of a massive sound mixing project that would go far more quickly if I had another VGA monitor.  One of our two flat screen TV receivers has a VGA input and works fine for my application--but stealing it for my home studio would not be popular with my wife and kids!

We have an old Samsung TV set that was given to us.  It appears to work fine but the reason it was given to us is that the remote was lost--and you can't get it onto a video input without the remote.  I'm waiting to hear back from Samsung whether they have a suitable remote and how much it would cost.

Anyway, my other idea is to use the UHF output of the Mystar box if there is one.  Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance.

Bob

Apologies for the title..it appears the software here won't let me do an all caps version of UHF in the title field.

No, only RF passthrough.

That was what I suspected but I got hopeful when I found reference to a modulator (including a listing of the channel range) in the MyStar online manual  here: http://media.austar....user_manual.pdf on page 69.

Thought of that...but according to the Samsung help forums none of the common universal remotes can do the AV command for some reason.  I have one universal remote here and my experiments seem to support this.

Ah well, trying to use my mother-in-law's old set was an idea anyway.

I'm a bit confused with what you are trying to do.....  how would a modulated UHF signal from a Mystar box (if it could be done) be able to display VGA on your TV?

I believe the op is trying to send a UHF signal to the tv so he can use the analogue tuner in the TV to receive the signal as he can't get the tv to turn to an AV input without a remote

I'm a bit confused

I'm not. Read the first post again. It's all to do about stealing a display for something else.

Hey Bob, what model of Samsung?

Some of these critters will allow selection of the AV input from the menu button on the TV - if it has one.

Some also have a TV/AV button, but I guess you don't have one of them.

What buttons are on the TV, anyway?

Edit: Yeah, the manual is typical Austar.

Yup, I can confirm the M'bozo is right.  I don't want to use the old Samsung CRT set for VGA, I want to steal an LCD flat screen (with VGA input) from it's existing use with a MyStar box and temporarily use the CRT for Austar watching in a bedroom.

The Samsung is model CP25SE1.

The buttons it has (from left to right) are labelled:

System I

P (with a diamond underneath)

M

Audio -

Audio +  (The two audio level buttons are linked across the top to the P and M buttons showing they'd do manual tuning when you programme it)

P (with an up arrow)

P (with a down arrow)

The first P button kicks off auto channel scanning, the M button can change this to manual using the audio levels to move up and down the band.

The second P buttons change preset programmes up and down but not through an AV, just the RF channels.

I've searched various Samsung forums and gather the inability to get to AV without the remote (or with a universal remote) is a common question, unresolved.

FYI, we got the set without instructions or remote when we cleared the house of an elderly relative who died a few years back--it's been cluttering the garage since then.

I have a couple of old db's here & that model number comes up as a Sanyo?

An old Sanyo service manual I have shows those buttons you describe as well.

However, I don't know everything :(

Doh!  You're quite right!  I had a brain fart when I sat down to type this, likely brought on by the word "Samsung" on the microwave I'd just used to reheat a sausage!

Yup, it's a Sanyo CP25SE1, not Samsung.

However, the previous searches for support, manuals, etc. all were done as Sanyo so that part is correct.

My next experiment is to see if I can get the old VHS, also in the garage, onto AV without a remote and use that as a modulator!

I may need a drink soon!

Probably your best bet.

The Sanyo manual I have is the same chassis as your TV, it's of no help.

Failing that, you can probably pick up a 2nd hand modulator from an aerial tech pretty cheaply.

Not that it really matters but using the VHS deck as a modulator has worked and the OH is now happy with her new TV while I'm happy with my re-allocated computer display.

Thank goodness she's not fussy about picture quality though--I'd forgotten what we used to put up with!
