League will stay on 9.  There wont be competition anyway (after hours) so it shouldn't be an issue

Looks good, but will be watching it on Foxtel.

Footy will go on 9 with Olympics on GEM. Remember 7 cutting off the Men's Basketball Gold Medal Match back in Beijing in favour of Buddy-Mania back in 2008 (West Coast Eagles v Hawthorn).

Hurts me to say this but at the moment, the native HD stuff on GEM (through VAST satellite MPEG4) is bloody good.  It was'nt always the case but  they seemed to have resolved whatever technical issues were spoiling the earlier efforts. Lets wait and see if the Olympics are the real deal and not upscaled.  I assume the host broadcaster will give 9 a HD feed.

Yes, the native HD stuff -- Friends, Special Ops, Sea Patrol Lisa McCune, some of the old movies (not all of them) -- still looks very good, even post 9-Extra  :-/

Looks like Nine is trying to push for a license to broadcast the Olympics in HD:
http://www.mediaspy....ympic-coverage/

If it's approved then it will easily be the highest quality HD channel across both FTA and pay TV to show the games, assuming that they broadcast with the same specs as the last 3D FTA trial.
FTA 3D HD H.264 @ 14 Mbps is going to blow away the quality of 6 Mbps H.264 Foxtel or 8.5 Mbps MPEG-2 GEM broadcasts.

Fantastic news if it pans out   :hyper: Perfect timing before the bandwidth is needed for the evening schedule :queen: Strange definition of ''regular 3d channel'' they have though..

Quote

To date, 3D television has failed to reach many viewers down under, with premium pay-for-view channel Foxtel 3Dbeing the only regular broadcaster of 3D content. If approved, Nine's new channel will be Australia's first regular free-to-air 3D channel.

God help the unfortunate viewers of the other channels on that transponder.. the quality will drop even further. I don't get it - 3D was a passing fad, why put effort into it?

There are NO other channels on the special trial broadcast multiplex. It only ever had a single video stream @14 Mbps.

The Nine Network has announced its intention to broadcast a standalone 3D channel for the duration of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The channel would most likely appear as channel 41 and would broadcast games highlights from 11:00am to 4:00pm daily. The channel's launch, however, still depends on the approval of the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) and Federal Communications Minister Stephen Conroy.

Speaking to The Australian, Nine Managing Director Jeffrey Browne said: "At the moment we're negotiating with the government and ACMA to get some extra spectrum...I'm expecting that we will get the approval. I don't want to pre-empt the process and appear to be getting ahead of myself, but they're favourable."

Failing ACMA approval, commentators have speculated that the 3D content could appear on one of Nine's multichannels GO! or GEM.

Some of us on this forum had predicted that a free to air broadcaster might attempt to provide some 3D Olympics coverage using either a specially authorised separate broadcasting frequency or by using their existing allocation.  Great to see Nine taking the initiative on this.

And finally some 3D content to watch. I'll have to make sure I record it daily. ESPN 3D on Foxtel is hopeless replaying the same crap daily.

Where the pictures are coming from...
Olympic Broadcasting Service http://www.obs.es/index.html
They are only shooting 200 hours of programs.
http://www.panasonic...l#anker_8057524
UK coverage http://www.bbc.co.uk...t-arts-17049246

Remember that the UK uses a single network of DVB-T2/MPEG4 transmitters carrying only HD programs from each network. There is one HD program stream unused. Their other two transmitters per site carry only SD programs on DVB-T/MPEG2
