Drizt, you can install stuff on it but not sure about what your after, squeeze centre is already there and there is a DLNA server. the TVersity and PS3media not so sure about but maybe picked up by other services, though if streaming to the popcorn, those others are not needed and if you still want them you can store stuff on the nas still and run them on the pc to then share to the ps3 if thats your goal

If I move all of my media off my PC onto a NAS I was hoping to have all of my streaming applications running on that NAS.

I stream movies to my phone etc that need to be transcoded before streaming.  I would have thought it would be best to do the transcoding where the data is rather than on another PC before streaming from there?  Hope that made sense.

Perhaps it is a non issue though.

I know synology add mkv transcoding for PS3, i am not sure about all transcoding & pretty sure iso/BDMV folders doesnt work.

Realistically the NAS's primary purpose is storage (though they are becoming a much more central device) and you would use the pc to trancode for your phone. There may still be a way to do it, its just not something I considered useful so never looked into.

budd - When ever you want mate, if I am around I'm happy to help usually avail after 8pm EDST. As for SAB and Sickbeard, if you're into tv shows, they are your own personal tv station. Your tell sickbeard what shows you want, it tells SAB where they are and to download them, then when finished, renames them to your desire method and moves them to your desired location.

Not bad at all, but just think how much time your gonna save if you just get the Synology or any other NAS for that matter lol. Everything will just work out of the box. With building a NAS it is known to be quite hectic unless you know what your doing. I build computers too, I looked at building a NAS but time just would not permit to play around with software settings and all that stuff to get working lol. But thats me, if I was you though have a look at other options when your ready and see where you can go from there :D

You can certainly save building your own Drizt, but what you miss is the support. Considering this device is holding all your data, if something happens its nice to know there is somewhere to call that MAY be able to help (my data has been rescued twice).

They way I look at it, almost any mug can put the hardware together, the premium I'm paying for is the brains of the software engineers (skills I dont have) that make that hardware do all the tricks. Mind you the DS2411+ is also cheaper than the price quoted.

Couple of quick thoughts about the specs above,
-You wont use sas drives, they are too expensive (though I realise they sas expanders support sata)
-You will never see benefit from SATA3 with HDDs (SSDs are a different storey, but your building for capacity not speed)
-Most uncompressed BD HD video/audio streaming is around 4-5MBs there is a few extreme test files (Birds) that will push a max 8-9MB/s so ignore the 30MBs its pointless

Anyways not saying you shouldn't build your own, just, like budd said, weigh your goals and options.

Edit - crap spelling

I added the registry setting.  I'll see if it works and report back.

Hive:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Key:SYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesBrowserParameters
Type:REG_SZ
Name:IsDomainMaster
Value:True

Did this work for you?...My master browser is the main pc. Is that OK...or does the NAS need to be a master browser? If so, how do I set the NAS to be a master browser?

Do you leave the nas on all the time? If you do or you only really network from the nas it can be best. In control panel under NFS/WINS there is a check box in WINS tab to enable wins server (this you should do regardless) and another to "make master browser". Not sure about DSM 4 but under 3.2 making master browser disabled hibernation; which if you have hibernate already disabled is irrelevant.

hey kill, i leave the nas on 24/7. I enabled hibernation for every two hours just like you have.

All the other computers turn off at the end of the day. So should i still make the nas the master browser?. Ill follow those
instructoons you gave me. sorry im typing this from my mobile lol

Yes, will be perfect for it. Me 2 re mobile

Edit -here

click theses, you wont have to worry about the ip address as it will be your nas

What it says when you enable the NAS as master browser is that it enables the guest account with out a password. Not a real problem at home.

I don't know if the settings made a difference yet.  I would have to start turning the devices on and off in difference sequences to see what happens.  So far it seems to be working but that might be just a coincidence.

As long as the PCH is not the master browser your golden :)

If you have multiple computers and network devices and nas/s, you can get the same problem where a computer or nas will disappear. The NAS being on 24/7 is a perfect candidate 2 be master.

I haven't noticed that.  On my network, it doesn't seem to matter which PC (I have a few) is the master browser, as long as the pch doesn't get it.

Synology DS2411+ accepts up to 36TB and you can also add an extension unit to it once you have run out of space on the 2411 :).........its just made everything so easy to share using a NAS. Its a beautiful thing!

I'm looking at getting a NAS in the coming months when funds permit.  Is this unit still the go to NAS ???  If not what is the current it and a bit unit :)  Is there a more affordable version?  $1700 seems expensive when you still have to add HDD's to the thing.

Do these things accept 3TB drives and larger ???

Yes they accept 3 & now 4 TB drives. The limitation was the file system, ext4 that they use now will accept 1EB which is a crap load more than TB. So good for foreseeable future

IMO they are still the NAS of choice, and you should get them for under $1500 (check out http://www.pccasegea...index&cPath=617) there is also a DS1812 & DS1512 that you can checkout if you don't want to spend that much.

I know this is way late but you may want to look if you ware running the Windows Live suite(Messenger, Live mail, etc). Anything beyond 2009 breaks SMB and i know that many media players will no longer be able to bworse the network with it installed. Removed Windows Live suite and all is good. That is assuming you run it. I know it doesnt sound right but trust me i and any others have had the same issue when you stream content off a Window PC to a NMT. I was recently forced to upgrade to the latest version and didnt bother as it would have broken all my SMB sharing for my media players. Just ended up using Trillian instead as my messenger client.

One workaround is to have a second account without windowz live installed and share your shares from that account.

My workaround is to just not use Messenger anymore. If MS dont want to come to the party and look at the issue then i wont use their client, Trillian works just as well for me. I realise that its more the manufacturers of the players that should do something about the new implementation of SMB but they are unlikely to do anything about it.
