Why don't Fox Sports broadcast in 5.1
I'd love to know that too, when the HD channels started (FS1, 2, 3 & ESPN) they were DD2.0 so I assumed it would just be a matter of time before they started doing 5.1

DansDans, please upload that game as a torrent!

:(

Unfortunately I cant. A year ago when I moved house I had to delete the recording that I had on my IQ2 unit (it was the LIVE ONE HD broadcast and not the Fox Sports replay, so it still had the commercials - however those last five game minutes were uninterrupted - whomever the director was in Master Control that day obviously had an eye for drama thrillers as he didnt want to cut to a commercial at any time!)

Even if I still had it, I wouldnt know how to package it up with with HD picture and 5.1 sound off the IQ2 unit and onto the computer to upload....

The best we can hope is 1) ONE/TEN get AFL rights again and replay the game, 2 )ONE just replays the game out of the kindness of their heart, 3) FS replays it once they upgrade to 5.1 4) A potential blu-ray release (not likely)

Not too sure if they can once they lose the rights, maybe the old games are the property of the AFL

" ... Well tonight's game, Eagles v Carlton was of course produced by Channel 7 but the gear they used here at Subi wasn't owned by Gearhouse Broadcast. 7 hired a old OB truck from the ABC here in Perth which was one of the first SD digital trucks built by the national broadcaster. I spoke to a freelance camera guy, a couple of weeks ago, who frequently does the Eagles / Dockers games for Foxtel & 7 and he told me that the next channel 7 game from Subi was going to utilise ABC resource hire for the broadcast. Apparently Gearhouse didn't have enough OB trucks to send out. Haven't Channel 7 heard of Global Television ? ... "

The Crows v Saints game (Channel 7 produced) on now looks pretty good.  Is it native HD or upscaled SD?

Upscaled sd, every channel 7 game is upscaled sd

Must be my wishful thinking.

The quality of "upscaled SD" seems to vary a lot though.  Last night's Perth game was terrible, yet tonight's game is half decent.

Nothing compares to native HD of course.  Well done to Foxtel for their commitment to high quality vision for AFL fans.

Seeing as the last 2 seasons that 7 have had the finals and did them in HD (except the GF replay) why would you think they would do the finals this year in SD.

I must admit, I would not be surprised if it was in SD.

A few years ago they never had all these extra channels either, so with the government saying they MUST broadcast it on their main channel, like I said, I wouldn't be surprised..........

I would be surprised, however, if it WAS in HD! :hyper:

Some areas don't yet have digital tv, so it's understandable that it must be shown on the main channel.

However, there is nothing stopping Seven simulcasting it in HD on 7Mate concurrently with the main channel

Look - I hope and pray you are right, but 7 have gone completely into the bunker on the HD issue. In one sense, when the inevitable occurs, there may be an upside in that the resulting debate will draw attention to the  'black holes' in the current TV rights deal.

What scares me a bit is the apparent collusion with the print media to sidestep any reasonable discussion on the AFL hd issue.

Actual there is,you see if they simulcast on both channels they can only have one advertisement on both channel not separate ads for each channel if there was different content so if they show BHG on 7 and AFL on 7Mate at the same time, they can have different ads and make more money!

It is absolutely about the advertising dollar, as Laurie said.

Yep agree BUT even now the slogan "No Ads siren to siren ....." well guess what Foxtel are doing..... banner ads on the bottom of the screen during the lead up to the game e.g. interviews and also the technology that super impose the score before the bounce onto the field could technically be used for ads!! as Wags said the dollar takes over

How is tonight's game for picture? Typical of FoxFootyHD?

Seems there's a bit of distortion during fast panning shots & the detail of the crowd at the opposite end of the ground falls away.

It's still great, but I'm comparing it to the early games on OneHD from years ago (which probably seem better than they actually were as they were the first HD sports images I saw)..

I didn't see last night but it looks pretty good having a look at the replay on now.

I'd love a recording from the footy on Ten HD from almost 4 years ago when i got my first plasma. I remember watching the footy for the first time and it looked like you could see every blade of grass. Not sure if it was that good or just seeing HD for the first time.

Other factors which may have made the OneHD broadcast seem better than it was, could be due to the smaller screen I was watching it on (42" then v 58" now) & the broadcast resolution/bit rates used at the time..

It will be interesting when the olympics are over. Foxtel will deem the 8 olympic channels on the one transponder a success at 5.6 mbps and will start to lower the Fox Sports channels from the current 9 mbps. Wait and see....

I don't reckon fox sports is anywhere near 9 Mbps, but Davmel maybe able to confirm or deny.........

Just checked now:
FS1 HD: 11.6 Mbps
FS2 HD: 10.5 Mbps
FS3 HD: 8.6 Mbps

FS1 & 2 HD have allocations way above all the rest of the channels on the same transponder. FS3 HD isn't as large because it shares a transponder with the 3D channel that has a bitrate almost as high as FS3 HD.
