Hi Guys,

I walked into the shop to buy a samsung LA40D550 (50Hz 1 yr warranty)
I was also offered a Sony KDL40CX520 (50Hz and also 1 year warranty)
a LG 42LK450 (50Hz 3yr warranty)
and to complicate matters a Sharp LC40L650X (100Hz 3yr but off the shop floor and probably seen Avatar re-runs every day for a few months)

All about the $600 mark.

I walked away scratching my head.......

For a bright room and mainly FTA watching.

What do you recommend I get?

So the Samsung wasn't available? If you've researched and narrowed down your choice I'd suggest sticking to it unless something else blew it out of the water (price or PQ etc). If you're happy with the Samsung PQ (which should only improve in home) then grab it. There should be a manufacturer extended warranty in the box (check with Samsung) so get that when you get home.

I wouldn't touch the LG.

Out of the others, choose which one you feel has the best PQ, but make sure you compare them with fast-moving images.. sport, etc.

50hz will be okay from 2.5mtrs for sport, but any closer and you might notice motion blur to some degree.
I'd take the Samsung btw.
PQ should be good to excellent for most FTA, even James Bond 1977 FTA HD looked good on my old Samsung 37in LCD.

Oz TV is 50Hz as is all TV sport here.
A good 50Hz TV will display all the motion information available in TV source.

Sony has the smart TV functions/skype etc but limited compatibility with HD media files.
Both are good TV's but LCD's are a dying breed with the big brands all moving to LED lineups so there are deals to be made!
The sammy can be had for just over $500 if you haggle well. Sony is $599 at tricky dicky.

Well thanks everyone for your thoughts. They were very helpful.

I bought the Samsung I was going to buy initially and I'm very happy with the result (LA40D550). Picture is great, easy to use, great connectivity and usb plays most files.

Turned it on this mornig with the morning sun blaring in to the room across the screen and it still looks great.

Did you mean CCFL LCD's are being replaced mainly with LED edgelit LCD's?
