I may be in the market for a media player soon. I was wondering if anyone has compared a dune to the popcorn hours? Seems to be a big following for both, some reviews i have read lean towards the dune others the popcorn hours :(

got it, setup hooked up. very impressed with the unit.

one major hang up cant get it to pass through dts-hdma for blu-ray iso

or for that matter even dd5.1 for DVD iso

chops is there some trick to this. the manual flicked through it could not be more brief !

have tried selecting audio using the remote incase thats it. but doesnt seem to be the case. even if there is a dts-hdma 5.1 track its only coming though as 2.0 pcm over hdmi !

I was just on the Dune website and i was reading and comparing the specs of all the smart series.

The D1, B1 and H1 are internally the same PCB and chips ... The only difference is the use of the Bay and the front panel

htpc, as posted  futher in the thread.

Yes I found setting that sends hdaudio natively through. so yeah what is on blu-ray is what comes through all formats dts-hdma, truehd, lossless pcm etc.. :)

ok new 3TB sata hdd installed inside the dune hd, first up found it was showing as cannot use on the dunehd. read up the manual

http://dune-hd.com/e...storage_devices

Quote

Formatting HDD

If you intend to write data to a HDD via the player, it is recommended to format the HDD to EXT2 or EXT3 filesystem. For example, you may need this if you intend to copy data to the player's attached HDD from network using FTP or SMB accessr, or if you intend to use the BitTorrent client built-in into the player, or copy data from other storage devices to this HDD using the file manager of the player.

To format a HDD using the player: choose the item corresponding to the HDD on the main screen of the player menu, press the INFO RC button, and choose "Format Disk" or "Format Partition" commands. The player will format the disk using "EXT2" filesystem. NOTE: To use EXT2/EXT3 formatted disks on a Windows PC, you may need to install additional software on the PC, such as "EXT2FSD"

so just had to do a quick format, and it sees it then. I started copying across about 750GB of movies we have on the usb hdd with it connected directly upto the dune as both are visible via network but that came up with 147 hours ! to copy across hehe

so abandoned that and instead connected up my sony netbook harwired to the router that also has the dune hd connected. and with the usb hard drive connected upto the sony netbook via usb copying across and that seems to be going pretty well. Be a while still though until copied across :)

once done will have to run duneX again ! boooo !

all transfered across ...woohoo. and all works. duneX took a flash to update, it already had the library of info on the movies I'd uploaded earlier so was just a matter of exporting to the dunehd again. which only took a minute and all works. must say am very pleased with the hard drive inside, quiet, and doesnt get hot or anything. a touch of warmth thats all. I suppose in a few years time...or earlier :D will go through all the same thing when the drive is filled up !

ps one interesting thing, once formated the 3TB drive really only ends up with 2.2TB of useable space. something you found as well chops ? or is it the case of kind of formating the dune hd uses ?

I haven't used a 3tb drive yet .... Downloads are all on the NAS, music and pics on the my book live, DVD iso's on 3 x 2tb drives.

They are formatted to NTFS though with windows and I have no trouble seeing them over the network with Win7 ... Write to them no probs too.

I do know my NAS does not support 3tb drives though perhaps the dune is the same?

A 2tb drive shows as 1.8 with NTFS.

thanks chops, all I read says supports 3TB no probs and seems to work ok. used the dunes internal format feature at the start. but yeah seem to loose a bit of space in the formatting.

800 gb lost is ridiculous though ... It's about time there was a crackdown on capacity claims .... If you advertised a car with a 70 liter tank that could only hold 40 liters all hell would cut loose.

So I ordered a D1 tonight rather than stuff around with my WD MyBook.
What drives are you guys using in them? WD Green or something else?

What file system is used? Some common file systems have a 2TB limit (e.g. FAT32, HFS)...

check my post further up, manual shows the formatting the dunehd uses, and it formats any internal drives to this,

Al would have ext2 or ext3 as he used the Dune to format it.

ext2? On some systems one can't create  > 2TB partitions: http://en.wikipedia....e_system_limits

Quote

Note: In Linux 2.4 and earlier, block devices were limited to 2 TB, limiting the maximum size of a partition, regardless of block size.

May be this, but more likely due to this: http://en.wikipedia....Partition_Table

Either way have to make sure Dune HD supports them to use > 2TB... Losing a fair bit of space though :(, if you wanna get them back, maybe you can try and create a 3TB ext2 partition using other apps (e.g. systemrescuecd) and see if it works?

He's loaded data on it now, so unlikely he will want to mess with it for a bit.

That I agree. No hurry right now... Maybe in the future dune will update the internal format feature to create GPT... As it is, probably best to stay safe within the 2TB limit anyway.

yep will leave well alone now, interesting link here,

http://www.mpcclub.c...hp/t-26239.html

I'd suggest stick to 2TB discs as max

though I guess do loose a bit formatting a 2TB as well. so 3TB with its 2.2TB formatted capacity is perhaps best can get for an internal drive.

The Dune will love your MyBook Live Luke, effectively bypassing the crappy DNLA streaming is a good move.

That's what I am hoping for mate.
Hopefully it arrives tomorrow and I can finally get my media setup how it was supposed to work in the first place.

Well, so far very happy with the D1.
I have set it up in the lounge to make use of the HDMI where as the WD sits in the study.
Not one file coming up as unsupported and set up has been straight forward (except the unit thinks it is in Perth, not Melbourne).

Looks good.

Cut Price Cables for me ... worked out about $3 cheaper and they took Paypal without sluggging me a fee ... postage was cheaper too.
