Hi guys,

Any suggestions on DVD titles to test out / enjoy with your home theatre system?

So far on my list
LOTR extended edition
Black hawk down
Nightmare before christmas (just because its my favourite movie)
Finding Nemo

Batman Begins has lots of good dark scenes
Matrix Revolutions for the train station parts - nice whites
Cars was just released so makes a good excuse to buy  it

Personally I find most places want to show you action and say "look how good this is" but I think the real test is how it handles the scenes with not much going on.  Are there distracting patches on walls and the like.

Take a disc you know has problems and see how the player handles them.  Maybe also one you know where the layer change is to see how long it takes.

I would agree with many of you..and thus would like to add just 2 recommendations:

1. Planet Earth - yes, the DVD is not within cooee of the ABC's HD broadcast, but the sweeping shots from the sky and closeup animal shots will really test detail, colour, and contrast.

2. Blade II - the most kick-ass audio ever! And the film is pretty good too...

Master and Commander is good for testing out your system, the cannon sure test your sub!

Yeah I'll second Master & Commander for fantastic bass response. The booming canons scared the crap out of my Aunty when she came over and watched it last Christmas. Not a bad flick either. The Superbit versions of Das Boot and The Fifth Element are also personal favourites of mine for showing off my HT set-up.

If you want good bass demo try The Haunting in dts !!!!  T3 is also pretty good and moving the house

Black Hawk DOwn - Region 3 SuperBit with dts (the Irene chapter with bass recorded as low as 5Hz!). Another one is Event Horizon, that movie is one sub killer soundtrack, particularly the recently released special edition on R1 with dts.

The Eagles Hell Freezes Over DVD in DTS blew me away when I first saw it and still does. The lead into Hotel California still gives me goose bumps. The beach landing scenes in Saving Private Ryan with the bullets pinging through the water. Kingdom Of Heaven fight scenes also a favorite, just an awesome movie. I think anything Ridley Scott is involved in is pretty darn good.

I concur with the fight scenes in Kingdom of Heaven.  Just fast forward through any scene with Orlando in it!
