I'm chasing prices on the new Sony DSTHD500 HD STB.
Recommended retail is $699 as shown on both this site and the Sony website.

Harvey Norman @ Bundall here on the Gold Coast just quoted me $799.

I had to ask a salesperson the price because of all the STBs piled up on the floor this was the only model not showing a price.

Congratulations HN the Legend lives on..

They are rubbish are'nt they... the only thing they are good for is a price match at another store when they are having a sale... funny what they are doing when it isn't  :P

I swore I'd never enter a HN store after I heard their ad way back when.

Well I worked there for a while, they wanted me to manage the Technical area in one of there Computer Superstores.  I saw enough to not want to take the job enough said. Puts flame proof suit on, I think I've judged your technique I believe you just want a flame war well not from me. I'm not here for that.

A normal retail tactic (trick) is to run with an obviously over price for some months like $799 then do a super dooper catalogue sale with a genuine $150 off sticker and drop it to $649.  Its a genuine price drop of $150 for that store and looks great in advertising but compared to other stores its just a $50 drop.

This sort of thing is standard practice in most retail especially jewellery.  Hint with jeweller if the sale price is not less than half of valuation price its not cheap enough.  If it actually at valuation price then wait 2 to 3 months and suprise suprise its now half price 50% off "wow" (not).

The moral is always shop arround, and do the more honest retailers a favour if they offer you the best price buy it off them dont buy from a place that will only match someone else.

Personally I would pay 10% more for something than buy from HN.

HN are meant to beat a competitior's price by an extra 10% (which in the case of the STB, would probably be around $50-60 or so)

Yeh, that's their supposed policy. But try and get a price match refund from them they will drag out their T's & C's so you have virtually no chance of getting it from them.

Their policy is to actually give you 110% of the difference, within 30 days of sale.  They have quite a lot of terms and conditions though.

I hate hearing bloody clive peeters ads on the radio. Always talking about their amazing specials, save $20, save $30, save a massive $50, off things that cost like 1 grand. Are they just another harvey norman like store?

Speakers = bloody huge mark up, Avreceivers = big markup,  Tvs and Lcd = average markup,  Plasmas= big markup (thats why they can do the good specials and still do that special deal just for you).

I agree,  their tired old ads and the screaming voice over put me off years ago and I haven't been in a H.N. store going on ten years.  You would think Jerry Harvey would wake up to himself.   Retrovision get my business.

Id realy think twice about buying from Harvey Normans, I bought a Philips TV $2200 3y ago and it was dead out of the box, they wouldnt have any thing to do with it, they had a "no returns polocy". I had to go through philips service centres, someone from philips rang to apologies and didnt understand why HN has this polocy. I work at a lighting warehouse and HN customers have to send/bring in their faulty lights by themselves (no store returns). I dont know if they have changed in the last 2 years but I would never buy from them again.

Thats what I thought, but I rang them twice and was put through to someone on the floor, I was told "we dont have the facilities to acept returns" and "we have a no return polocy". When I rang Philips they seemed very suprised. So I dont know if it was the one store or what, but at Brilliant lighting warehouse we only acceped store returns, never received one from Harvey normans, just from harvey normans customers. Now I havent worked there for 1.5 years so I dont know if the story has changed or not. But its enough to put me off HNs for good.

Oh I don't know, I've always found if you see a sales person and ask them to price match the r.r.p. they will do it.

My son went shopping for a PDA last week. When he saw it at HN, it was $50 above the RRP on the Palm website. When he confronted the sales guy, he just said, "Yeah, we know about the price drop." and offered it to him at the new RRP. He ended up buying it at Wow for $50 below the correct RRP. What a scam.

Certainly the advertised RRP's at the major retailers are irrelevant. It seems the only way to get a true feel for the value of products is to invest time in forums such as this where people are preapred to share their experiences.  As prices for electronics products fall so fast & models become quickly obsolete it's always going to be difficult to determine a 'fair' price at a point in time.

My wife and I went into HN recently asked best price on a receiver that was $1999 rrp said best price was $1475, went back last week asked again told him new model was coming, told then best price was $1675!, told sales guy dealer in Sydney had it for $1295, he said not possible!, bought it from Sydney + $40 freight, so much for price match. We are not going there again.

Hardly Normal is it?    There are franchises though, and often the computer and home theatre sections are seperate businesses also within that franchise. Often they are forced into offering a specific price and deal/match etc. but often when it comes down to it the individual managers/owners do not agree with it, or feel they can't afford to sell it that cheap... they are buggers though, the first TV I got off them has mould in the box... the TV had been wet before! They brought a new one around but the guys that delivered it threw it around so much it will probably f*&k out before the warranty is up (at least it was 3 years). I will never buy anything from them again in my life, just use them for a price elsewhere when they are having a "sale".

yes tend to concur we bought a de longhi (absolute pos) coffee machine from HN and after being assured several times that yes it was fully automatic for cleaning, got it home and found out you had to pull the thing apart to clean it......  Needless to say returned it rather short order after going apes...t in the store.... Bought another brand from an internet retailer and love it....
