i imagine there has been a debate about speaker cables for years? the wiring i have is really cheap so i want to change it, if that is necessary of course. mine have a few connections along the cable as well, which i heard isn't the ideal situation.

i read a couple of articles on the 'net where one said 'yes' you will notice a difference with better cables, while the other predictably said the opposite.
so do more people say better cables/better sound?

i read that i should get 16 gauge cables?  so would this particular wiring be ok do you think?

thanks.

if just looking for some good budget stuff thats well made the australian made tycabb linear crystal is a great buy.

http://www.tycab.com...ar-crystal.html

as to anything else making a difference. answer is simple. check with most specialist stores most have cable sets they use. ask if can borrow a set over a weekend or overnight. try for yourself. if find its worth gettting get em. otherwise dont bother :)

Short Answer: No, within reason, there is very little difference.

Some of the stuff is absolute wank - Ive seen on a certain popular brand speaker cable markings that say "Signal Flow >>>>>" down one side of the cable.... (Audio is AC).

Speaker wire is either thick enough or not thick enough.  Even the OFC numbers don't mean as much as many people claim.  If you have spent megabucks on your gear then maybe you need to worry about dielectric effects or silver cables vs copper vs cryo treated vs blessed-by-virgins-and-rolled-on-the-back-of-a-holy-goat-in-the-first-rays-of-sunlight-of-the-dawn-of-the-winter-solstice brand cable (patent pending) but for most of us it is just nice thick copper that does the trick.

Cable made from recycled cans (of worms) seems to be popular.

Why has this blown up here and over on Whingepool at the same time (again...)? Isn't the magic fairy dust speaker cable selling fast enough at the moment?

its just the usual hoopla that surrounds any mention of 'cables' in a discussion that seems to drive people in a frenzy

Here is a selection guide for speaker cable, at these very low impedances that loudspeakers work at no other electrical characteristc matters other than the series resistance of the conductors themselves.

You will see from the chart that very long speaker cable runs are possible for any given loss in DB for a stated speaker impedance.
Just select the wire diameter and the speaker impedance and you have the maximum length for any acceptable loss in power.

There is nothing more to it than that. :twitch:

There is also a  .PDF available of the chart, just google 'Speaker Cable Selection Guide'

But there are so many suckers out there. Surely there's room for one more retailer ready to cater to this segment.

meh... different speaker cables introduce different flavours. as such use cables to tune the system.

because its about tuning, what is best for me may not be best for you.. hence the mass debate.

for long runs (say > 3m) i'd go budget. have  look at online webshops and take your pick. if you need to terminate with plugs or spade, see if you can find non brass ones. i got some fantastic spades from hk but alas they don't make em anymore. :(

Yes, blind obedience to untested beliefs can have unfortunate outcomes, as history has shown.
We are only talking about cables here but a noose is always possible.

for some reason i thought this was about ht. juz realised its wrt 2channel. in that case one should be able to hear differences. ymmv, but i like ribbonteks. approx $500-600 but considering the quotes from this thread this is pocket change. or save even more by diy your own flat cable.
