Another topic to move Star Bors down the list:

In other news, we've gotten a bit of clarification from our sources on CBS's in-progress Star Trek: The Next Generation - Remastered Blu-ray sampler disc. The disc will include FOUR episodes, two of which will include Encounter at Farpoint, Parts 1 and 2. We're told that the other two should be The Inner Light and Sins of the Father. It's still up in the air when the official announcement will happen, however it's worth noting that the 45th anniversary of the Star Trek franchise happens this Thursday - The Original Series debuted on NBC back on September 8th, 1966.

I've also read they are re-doing the special effects as original show effects done in NTSC.

Yeh I've been following the discussion on this over at AVS - personally I can't wait for this - I'm thrilled they are doing it. The big questions for me are:

1) How good will the new SFX be?
2) Are we getting 1.33:1 eps or possibly 1.78:1 reframed with more picture maybe?
3) How good will the PQ be overall.....
4) 5.1 or 7.1 remixes like TOS?

Does George Lucas have a say in this

Yeh I have been holding off watching any of it for years due to this wait for it to come on Blu-ray. Have another trek nerd in the family and sometimes they get tempted to watch the episodes on ELEVEN (Ten's TV channel) - SD quality but not terrible PQ (not sure what the DVDs are like), but I immediately change the channel and say 'WHAT ARE YOU DOING? DON'T WATCH IT'  :D I have informed them that the BD is coming so they will behave now

I've got some downloaded some on DVD, but even the 11 broadcast version still seems washed out, muddy and with a redish hue. Still unsure if this is due to the way it was filmed but hopefully the episodes look alot better in HD. Of course they're going to cost fortune to begin with, especially here...

I have the current Aus release STNG on DVD (slim cases) and for the age of the show I think the PQ and effects are quite reasonable and the 5.1DD is also quite decent for a late 80's / early 90's show.

Heh cost is of no concern to me for these - as long as the HD quality is good to great.

Be great if they did to it what they did on the original. Very tidy

Does it matter? If they make both the 'new' and old FX separately available as per TOS then everyone is happy - and we know they can do it.  If they muck the new FX up then the old ones at least aren't TOO bad, given their age.

Its looking doubtful - from The Digital Bits:

By the way, we're told that the show's original 1.33:1 aspect ratio will be preserved (and that's what you'll get on Blu-ray), but 1.78:1 versions may be created for use in certain distribution venues. We'll post more as it's available.

I'm not interested in 4:3 material any more - I watch the DVD's rarely and this is the main reason why I don't persist in  re watching them all again ... I find I talk myself into re watching Bablyon 5 (in 16:9) or BSG instead.

Totally agree.
4.3 On a wide screen of any sort  now to me is just sacrilegious now days.  :o
At least M.J.S. had the for sight to film B5 in wide screen.  :)

1.33:1 aspect ratio  :(

Not for me at that price.

These will have to be near reference to justify the double dip.

TOS series was remastered in 16:9, no?

The DVD's of TNG are bloody awful. Surprised they got away with it.

HD shots (looking good!)

Then crap we get fed to us on 11 is REALLY LOUSEY.

I saw STTNG in the USA earlier this year on the sci fi channel and the PQ was heaps better than what we are getting served up to us even if it was 4:3.

I will defintely be buying this on bluray when it lobs.
