Is It better than Channel 7 quality?

I havent got the channel 7 recording but i've never seen it anywhere near that good on 7. I'm watching on a 64" Samsung at abit under 3 meters.

Love your choice of tv. I have the 64 inch D8000 as well and anything other than HD looks terrible...

I have the same and am amazed at how good poor quality sources look on it.

I asked because I remember people observing during the first few rounds of the season, that there was hardly any difference between the upscaled stuff on Fox & Se7ens' SD.

Question: Has anyone ever transferred from pure Foxtel onto Foxtel from Telstra? Were you able to keep your original deal from Foxtel when doing this?

Chaning tack slightly - understand the finals series are 7 designated games; does this mean that we are going to get the entire finals series including the GF upscaled?

Absolutely it does, everything fox simulcasts from seven is upscaled,
I had a feeling when the broadcast deal was announced that seven were never going to allow us to have high definition broadcasts of there games on fox footy

Now that I've just seen what HD Footy is like on Foxtel, I can give my first impressions of the channel:

Good..
Picture quality for Fox games.
Slightly better audio than FTA.

Bad..
Bad picture quality for Se7en games.
No 5.1 audio.
No Picture-in-Picture
No 'Swap channel' feature.

^The last 3 pretty much sum up my impression of all Fox Sports HD channels. Disappointing omissions by Fox, when there are so many opportunities for enveloping surround sound, & many different sports to watch, often at once.

Or last channel - you know how you can toggle between your current/previous channel selected?

The " Back " button will do that.

No 5.1 is disappointment, but sometimes your AVR's DSP's can sound better anyway?

But do you think the upscaled games on Fox look better than 7 or not?

DSP's aren't "natural" surround modes though. I use them sometimes, but a pure Dolby 5.1 broadcast is always more enveloping.

Upscaled games, if anything, look better than Se7en. But these may vary (I've seen others' comments saying they have been just as bad during certain rounds). I can only comment on what I've seen this round*.

The old one HD 5.1 broadcasts were only ok IMO. With live sport some of the artificial surround modes sound pretty good, depends on the equipment too!

Yamaha RXV1900, so nothing special.

Going through them now. The Dolby PLII modes sound better than the DSP ones. Might have to stick with one of them.

Watching on a 100" screen with 1080p projector

FTA games - 5/10 (Not even worth watching at this size)
Fox Upscaled 7/10
Fox HD Games - 9/10

For me, it's chalk and cheese. FTA is even hard to watch on my 37" LCD

No 5.1 is a pain but would sacrifice that for all HD games

I agree that the upscale makes a difference, channel 7's picture is so bad i can't beleive this crap is allowed by the AFL.

Completely disagree.. ONE's 5.1 broadcasts were terrific with their immersion of the game, especially their MCG broadcasts.

I was at ANZAC day 2009, and have watched the ONE HD broadcast of the game dozens of time in HD, and the atmosphere that the TV broadcast provided (with the obvious addition/exception of the commentary in the centre channel) was almost on par with being there - almost, because being in an 86,000+ crowd cheering like mad in the final minutes of one of the most exciting games you'll ever watch will never ever be emulated on the TV, but it got pretty close.

Watch the final few minutes, when Lovett kicks the ball into the Bombers 50 and Jetta is running after it - the rear channels kick in with the crowd cheering as they see whats about to happen, the effects in the front two speakers then come into play with the surrounding cheers while the commentator (Tim Lane - I've watched this dozens of time) picks up his excitement in the centre channel - its a phenominal broadcast. I was there at the game, I remember how loud it was when it happened, and providing your amp is set to a decent volume level, thats moment is *almost* matched on the broadcast. When Zaharakis kicks the final game... well... the broadcast does an incredible job of making you feel there - and thats not only thanks to the crisp 1080i picture, but ONE's use of the 5.1.

ONE's Grand Final telecasts were incredible for this reason as well (obvious exception being last year when we were lumped with a live SD broadcast)

To this day, the most incredible 5.1 sound I've heard on ONE was a tee shot at one of the American golf tournaments. That "whoosh" sound that pan through all 5 speakers as the golfer was teeing off was absolutely incredible.

Yep, they were OK, its just that "I" put PQ over AQ with live sport.

You can tweak average sound a fair bit yourself, but if you have a sh!t picture, there is not much that can be done. (I'm lookin at YOU se7en!)
