Blu-ray 2011 - A Year In Review
Well.... another year is quickly coming to a close..... and my personal Blu collection has grown (and there's still many sealed titles - even stuff from the Black Friday Sale of 2010!!)
Some topics for discussion : 3D, PRICING, TITLES / RELEASES, LOCAL B&M STORES & SALES, and OVERSEAS.
3D
- So much promise - but so much CRAP. Sure, most new screens have 3D capability, but so what ? 3D TV shows are non existent, and 3D titles are mainly animation flicks, with the odd 3D conversion. And let's not even discuss the PRICING of these 3D titles !!! And the one 'big' title is still not available for standard purchase - AVATARD. All hopes of THE HOBBIT rescuing 3D are IMO premature. So what will becoming of 3D ??
TITLES / PRICES
- Well 2011 saw the (eventual) releases of the STAR WARS films, the extended LORD OF THE RINGS films, JURASSIC PARK trilogy, and finally the COMPLETE HARRY POTTER collection - accompanying these titles were of course the HIGH prices for these locally. Let's charge a price over $100 for a box set and watch the local punters jump to attention. IMO this hasn't worked. Sure, the hard core hi def addict purchased (and in most cases repurchased) these old titles, but there's still a stack of stock that remains available.
- The 'days' of new releases being below $30 seems to have been a thing of the past (not that I've bought a new release). $35 seems to be the norm - and even higher for 3D.
- Still there's been a lot of those 2 for $20 / $30 at JB .... but the titles need refreshing.
OVERSEAS - what keeps our posties and couriers busy.................
- AMAZON UK - our 'saviour' (when the Pound is lower against the Aussie $). And thank you for the ongoing 'free shipping' - the gift that keeps getting re-newed every few months.
- CDWOW AU - sadly no more DVDs or Blu (not that they were that cheap)
- AMAZON US - well.... it's there for the Black Friday stuff...... and if you really want new new titles !
B&M STORES (LOCAL)
- JB continues to hold fort for the Blu. Whereas all the others - its just a product line.
THE FUTURE.......well .... 2012
- With the BIG TITLES now out - what's left for Blu ?? Sure there's the Indiana Jones collection..... and TV shows haven't been a big seller (too expensive for most people).........what will happen next year ??

Nice summary Tony, i usually sell things at what i think are a reasonable price on here but re: Star Wars set i took advantage of the buy 2 get 1 free with Big W and then ebayed the other two sets and my set only ended up costing me around $35 which aint bad for 6 bd's but yeah i wouldnt have paid $120 or whatever it was thats for sure.
Also on pricing i wont buy titles at $30+ i either wait for a drop or import but thats just me
I have been impressed with a lot of older titles in terms of PQ and AQ like Taxi Driver,Breakfast At Tiffanys,Sound Of Music and the list goes on.
Also you mentioned Indiana Jones,im waiting for Jaws
and afew other catalogue titles...providing they do a decent job on the PQ and AQ etc
I must admit though i have looked ahead on bluray.com release calander and there isnt a heap of titles im waiting for, that probably means i have too many lol
Cheers Ryan

Not sure I agree 3d yes, but new titles have been under the $30 mark mostly from big w and the like and box sets if you wAit a few weeks have been below the $100 price. I think you can easily look for downside but i am not too displeased with what I have bought this year, no damn it, actually pretty happy. My only gripe is with the laziness of a few studios where they have turned out poor transfers and figured the public don't have to get anything better.

Not just a good summary, but a darn good one at that.
All B&M new release titles need to come down in price,
as a price gouge indicator the 2 weeks where JB had a supposed 20% off all titles, the first or second day of the sale i picked up 2 copies of Red dog and Torchwoods latest all 3 just over $96 @ minus the 20% not to bad i thought, the following week i thought i better grab a copy of Kung Fu Panda 2 for the little one, $39 i don't think so, 2 days later after the sale $36, yeah well thanks but no thanks.
Waltzed into big W with a$50 voucher, k f p 2 $28 odd same with Rise of the planet of the apes ( don't judge, blind buy ), cost me $7.80 all up.
The descrepencies between stores and supposed sales are crap, misleading and down right bs at times.
As for the future lets hope, but i don't hold much hope and will continue to import the majority of titles , even AMC's The Walking Dead SEASON 1 isn't scheduled for release here til March next year, At least Game of thrones is almost a match in release time.
Minor rant over.........
