just trying to more objectively identify and quantify the issue, I ran a few "quick and dirty" tests with my SPL meter and at 50cm from the display I have been able to replicate a difference of 38.6db (TV in standby) vs 40.8db (TV on).

from the main seating position i couldnt get a measurable change with the meter, however my place can be a bit noisy with traffic noise and birds outside being larger contributers to variation in SPL meter changes. i was able to hear it very clearly though.

the 2.2db increase at 50cm objectively doesnt seem like a lot and certianly doesnt reflect my perception of it - which is no doubt increased due to knowing its there.

Yes the main thing is you hear it. And now that you have you probably won't stop hearing it.

My bedroom is adjacent to the neighbour's pool. I can hear their filter box when I'm trying to sleep. Most people probably wouldn't even notice it or wouldn't be bothered by it as the noise is quite low. But it drives me frickn crazy. Luckily I have good neighbours and they are ok not switching it on at night but every time the power goes off the filter timer resets itself and they sometimes forget to change it so I have to pop over to gently remind them.

So I feel your anguish. TV watching is meant to be enjoyable.

Unfortunately a room with a slate tile floor and no soft furnishings is going to be diabolical for buzz, even a tiny amount will be amplified by the room.
See if you can isolate the source to the front or back of the TV, if its coming from the back some damping material on the wall will help.
If hanging a thick blanket or rug over the front of the screen does not reduce buzz significantly it is likely coming from the rear of the set.

Thanks for the replies, I've since tried the following:

- put ferrite cores on both ends of the tv power cable
- unplugged all other devices in the area and/or connected to the power points
- unplugged all the source interconnects (hdmi, Ethernet etc)
- connected directly to the power socket (bypassing the power board)
- connected to 2 other power power outlets (one on the other side of the room, another in the kitchen)

None of the above made a difference.

To me the sound is coming from the front of the panel itself (the glass, all over). If I put my ear to the sides, top or bottom, I can't hear it at all. Likewise lifting the panel out a bit from the wall to try and listen behind it, there is a sound, but it's not the buzzing.

Might go back to the store and see if I can notice the same buzz from other D8000 plasmas.

Groan, I really don't want to have to replace it again!

D did you notice between this panel and the one before ? perhaps its only this set ? perhaps grounds to get another swap. do samsung have techs who can pop out ? might be able to tell you if intrinsic to the set.

to be honest I doubt youd hear anything in store tend to be just too noisey an environment if looking for small sounds...

Shame you can't pop over to my place. I'd defy you to hear any noticeable buzzing whatsoever coming from my panel at any reasonable viewing distance. Perhaps I just got lucky.

If the noise isn't emanating from the rear of the panel I'm not sure what else you can do other than swap it out. Untraining your ears to no longer hear it probably isn't going to work if it's already getting to you in a brief time of ownership.

I take it you've never had this issue with any of your former TVs such as the Hitachi??

Definitely no issues with the last tv, although when I got this one I put it on the opposite wall and turned everything around, so not exactly the same situation. Still, certain i would have noticed if it buzzed.

Had no issues either with my mitsi pj 1m above my head in my old theatre room.

I'm pretty sure from memory the last one buzzed as well, however I actually thought it was the apple tv's hdd (which sits just under the tv).

Will ring samsung tomorrow and see what they say. Would be great if they could send someone out, not so easy to drop off as they used to be!

I know when I got my D8000 it buzzed real loud.Never noticed a sound out of my C7000. I was ready to have samsung out but there was nothing else wrong with it do I thought I'd give it some time.

It still buzzes but I don't notice it now. I think it is less than when it was brand new but still there. Funny thing is I notice my old panasonic 42" buzzes crazy loud, yet I never even noticed before. Alot of problems seem bigger than they are because we're looking out for the smallest imperfections.

I'm not saying your issue is small though and if you think it's going to bother you then I would get it swapped. I just know in my case once my senses had tuned down to picking up any problems, I don't have any. And yea I think it's pretty much a lottery, some buzz and some don't. Good Luck!

Well I certainly hope it's not just me being over critical, I am trying to ignore it as I don't want to swap it put again. I spoke to samsung today and they are going to send someone out, so hopefully will get to the bottom of it.

Btw there is another f/w update on the samsung website.

Is this buzzing anything like the Pioneer LX508 issue?
My 508 buzzes, wife cant hear it but drives me nuts some times. Had Pioneer service agent out a few years ago who had a look, did some SPL tests a certain distance from the screen and said it was "within spec" and Pioneer wouldnt do anything about it. There were some threads on here about it, some folks used acoustic tiles on the wall to try and deaden it.

was watching some 3d content on the samsung yesterday afternoon and noticed the glasses are losing synch with the panel.
Thought maybe it was just my pair, but my daughters did the same thing.

Anyone else experience this?

think i may be contacting samsung on Monday

Are the batteries getting flat/or need re-charging? Can't say I've heard of any synch issues on this years models now that they're using blue-tooth.

I would suggest you take your glasses to your local retailer & see if the synch issue happens on the display model. If it doesn't, then you most likely have a fault with the 3D transmitter in the tv. If the synch issue does happen, then your glasses are faulty, though very unlikely that all 3 would be faulty.

I'm yet to read of any synch issues with the bluetooth glasses. Unless you're surrounded by a mass of of bluetooth devices I'd suggest a fault with 3D transmitter. How far are you from the tv? Have you tried the glasses one at a time?

Andys.

I recall with my c7000 I didn't notice any buzz. This was mainly because used to view it with daughters and wife involved in chatting in the adjacent dining room and also in the room whilst watching telly. There was always something that disturbed the silence of the listening room.

Then on a very quiet evening which extended to the very earlier hours of the morning. I turned of my HT equipment with the Harmony but the TV was still running in HDMI 1 mode. I got up and as soon as I turned by head 90 degrees to the panel I heard a very loud buzzing noise. It sounded similar to the noise you hear near a transformer station. I sat down this time looking directly at the TV and no buzz. I then started to turn my head and had heard the buzz loud and clear.

It is definitely there. It is a lot louder and I mean a lot louder in the Samsung than my Panasonic. The Panasonic can be faintly heard from my listening position when I turn my head but the Samsungs was irritably loud.

Glad to see you are still making your informed contribution "radio star" :) . Have been involved in the Audio threads for a while. Have a real passion for 2 ch music.

Occasionally I have a peek on this topic. Notice old Owen still going strong .

Video-philia is catching   Not sure it is as expensive as having 2 channel obsession.

As an ex 2 channel audio nut going back to the 1970's I have to agree, video is a MUCH cheaper hobby these days.

It's unfortunate that high end video is now restricted to projectors.

Agree but it is  the natural progression. Videophiles generally are people who live in a batcave who watch their movies in complete darkness.

This suits PJ perfectly.

A 50 or 60 inch screen (eg pio Kuro) is just too small to be used as a substitute. Also price wise the PJ is cheaper per square inch :D.

thanks for the tips, may just take one set of glasses to the local good guys and see what happens on their tv.

Since then i havent bothered with 3d, just wanted to try it to see what its like. I am not a fan of #D, but my daughter loves it :)

As for bluetooth devices, apart from my phone, nothing else in the room.

i'm sitting about 3mtr from the screen

No probs. Happy to help. I hope you get it sorted. Given what you've said I'm leaning towards the 3D transmitter as the fault. Do take the glasses in and see what happens. Are you still within the return period or not? If not, still try & push the Good Guys for an exchange if indications are that there's a fault with the tv.

Cheers.

How long is the return period Andy?

am thinking i may just take it back, pq is brilliant, but between the buzzing on and off and this, dont think i want to keep it.
was purchased on the 13/10 so only 5 days old

edit, saw it is 14 days, so will call the good guys and return it

I fail to see how anyone could expect to return a TV without it being packed the way they received it.

What do you expect the retailer to do with the TV?"
