Good, let Fox Sports show it properly live in HD.

Hopefully they can share the rights, that would be great!

HD on Foxtel/Austar has definately taken a hit lately with increased compression.  Its still pretty good but nowhere near as good as before.  By the way - GEM appears to have upped the bit rate on VAST and in the regional affiliates.  Watching CSI at the moment and it looks awesome.

It will be interesting to see if they do put the cricket on GEM after 6pm now that the cricket will be on after 6 with the rain delays!

Im in Brisbane and am watching via Optus D1 Satellite as the Nine Victoria lineup is FTA.

And they used GEM in Adelaide as well for the cricket at 6.00pm.  And the reason why they didn't use GEM when New Zealand was here because the minister didn't reply to channel 9 request in time they made a request 3 weeks out from the first test and Stephen Conroy didn't reply.

If the Nine Network had the Cricket on Nine and GEM they would forego the opportunity to have alternative programming on GEM which means less viewers. It is more attractive to the network to offer diversity with more channels, to maximise their audience numbers.

Just cannot believe that Freeview is going down the drain. Thank Goodness for Foxtel and it's two hour highlight package in HD.

Blame all of the lazy people who refused to upgrade to digital during the early and mid 2000's. If they had have bought a HD STB/DVR then the laws preventing the networks from showing major sporting events on the multichannels before they've aired on their main channels would have been reversed by now.

Nine won't shift the entire broadcast of the cricket over to GEM until 95% of people have access to HD.

I don't think it's harsh to expect people to embrace new technology when they know it's coming. The ones who've held off on buying a STB/DVR until the last minute are probably the ones that spend hundreds each month on getting tanked, but they won't fork out $100 for a STB.

I blame the govt...for having no idea about the technology in the first place and basically using FTA-backed 'advisors' to dictate policy and get us to where we are now.

It is now 2012 and we have far less HD content than we did all the back in 2000 for petes sake....at least at the turn of the millenium all the channels were running native HD test loops 24/7 to sell Sony HD CRTs in the showrooms.

Highlights package is of no use to me - live HD sport is what's missing all too often on FTA.....

Probably harsh.

What about the elderly who, for a large part, would see no benefit from HD anyway + they'd want to avoid changing devices for as long as they can, as it's a new remote control to learn to use..

It's about money, plain and simple.

Govt state it has to show cricket on "main" channel, so the networks are never going to show the same thing on a digital channel because advertising revenue would be less.
