GoForMoe, that is quite useful. I'll try to do one for Brisbane this weekend unless someone else beats me to the draw.
EDIT: done.

NOTE: The predecessor to this thread is in another part of the forum: DTV Forum Australia - Australia's Leading Digital TV and AV Forum > Miscellaneous > Digital Television and Radio - Off-Topic

That old thread is: Digital Radio Stations....definitive List

Canberra DAB+ trial

10B 211.648 MHz

666 ABC Canberra, 48 kbps
ABC Jazz, 56 kbps
ABC Grandstand, 48 kbps
ABCRadioNational, 48 kbps
triplejUnearthed, 56 kbps
ClassicHits Plus, 64 kbps
FEC Test, 64 kbps
Hot Country, 64 kbps
MIX 106.3 FM, 64 kbps
My Canberra, 64 kbps
RADAR RADIO, 64 kbps
SBS Radio 1, 48 kbps
SBS Radio 2, 48 kbps
SBS Chill, 80 kbps
SBS PopAsia, 80 kbps
104.7-HIT MUSIC, 64 kbps
2CA Digital, 64 kbps
2CC Digital, 64 kbps

Sums to 1088 kbps, so there''s still a bit of wriggle room. Or maybe the ABC could up the rate for their stations. Do you have to pay by the kbps for access to the ensemble?

There is a site that takes these observations, and others, for a world view, "DAB Ensembles Worldwide." e.g. http://wohnort.org/d...a.html#Canberra

It would be interesting if someone could co-ordinate a sample of ABC Jazz at 56kbps vs the 80kbps elsewhere, as well as the 96kbps mono MP2 that is on DTV. To my ears the ABC's 80kbps is no where near as nice sounding as Mix/Gold were when they used to be at 80kbps before ARN ruined everything. Likewise with Magic, its old 88kbps still sounded a bit flat compared to ARN's 80kbps stations.

Classic Hits Plus at 64kbps vs 48kbps is another interesting example, though I wonder what quality the raw feed is? Perhaps the Canberra transmissions are recompressions of the original DAB+ output in other cities.

Out of the Melbourne multiplex, the community stations seem to have the crispest sound, I've listened to a bit of Light Digital and Syn, and they are much closer to their FM counterparts than other stations are. DMG's efforts are okay too. But Austereo and ARN both sound terrible.

Thanks everyone. Just one request though, could you point out where community stations are not simulcasting their FM/AM program?

Hows does 2CC sounding is it in stereo? They take Saturday night live? Is that in stereo like in Sydney? I think 2ue sounds great. What about 4BC in brisbane it is now taking saturday night live is that in Stereo? I wish ARN/2SM etc would consider making the bit rate higher up to at least 64 K but make it sound decent like the stereo. understand 128 K is not an "option", though I wish all stations were 128K in full stereo.

In Brisbane, ABC Dig Music and ABC Jazz are at 128kbps MP2 mono. They are somewhat bland and muffled sounding for my hearing though I think many people are reasonably happy with 128kbps mono or 256 kbps stereo for MP2. There's a graph comparing MP2 stereo and AAC+ stereo perceived quality at the bottom of the webpage http://www.digitalra...mp2_vs_aac .htm

ARN in Brisbane are using 48kbps nominal for each of their 6 streams. It's a horrible, congested sound. They could drop a couple of streams and achieve much better quality.

For some really thin MP2 sound, there's SBS Radio 1 and Radio 2 on DTV (in Brisbane) at 160kbps MP2 stereo. I don't think I'd ever heard such low bitrate stereo MP2 before.

Not yet and probably not at all. Mix 90/80s took the spots that it used to pop up on.

Can someone please advise the current bitrate for SAFM [in Adelaide] on DAB+?

Today, at Harvey Norman, Rundle Mall, I heard a radio playing with the telltale artifacts of moderate bitrate DAB+. The display indicated SAFM, but I couldn't get it to show the bitrate.

G'day,

I've already contacted Magic 1278 about this one, but if you look at the bitrates for Magic (64kbps) and 3MP (48kbps) You'd think Magic would sound better, but 3MP has the better sound quality

What's going on at Fairfax? Even The Buckle is sounding awlful, while 3AW is sounding pretty good (higher bitrate used though)

Even the Magic 1278 manager reckons on his home device, Magic sounds better

3MP is 64kbps as well. But I'd note that much of it comes down to the audio processing and the quality of the source, Magic might have lower quality transfers of their music because they were on AM and it wouldn't have mattered. The DMG stations compared to the Austereo ones (also all at 64kbps) have a similar quality difference in the end result.

For The Buckle, there might be recompression issues with the source, if they aren't sending it to Melbourne already at the broadcast bitrate.

Just checked my radio and 3MP is definitely 48kbps. I then checked all Pacific Star stations and was very surprised since my last check. They are WASTING bitrate on MTR (128kbps). SEN is on 40kbps and so is AUSSIE. Wonder if this has anything to do with the "bosses" in Sydney (MRN). IMO this is a complete waste. The music stations need to be at least 64kbps. There's no reason at all why all 4 stations shouldn't be on 64kbps. An email to Pacific Star is on the way!

G'day GoForMoe,

Obviously there's respect for your list, where in October you've noted 3MP was on 64kbps, but it seems some of these stations have been playing around a bit. Maybe a new list is needed. 3MP is definately on 48kbps, and MTR on a massive 128kbps, the highest in Melbourne, but that's what 2GB in Sydney are on arent they?

As I said, I've contacted the Magic boss, and he says each playout system for the Buckle is different, so you'll get a different song in each city at any one time, I havent tested it, and they dont stream, so only going by what he's said

I just checked my DAB+ receiver & 2GB is transmitting on 96kbps. Sister station 2CH is also transmitting on 96kbps, the highest bitrate of any commercial AM music station.

G'day dtv_campbelltown,

Interesting observation, doesnt make sense then why they'd put MTR in Melbourne up so high, only to reduce the other stations in it's network, SEN definately doesnt sound as good as it used to (but it's better than Magic at the same time)

Out of interest, what bitrate is The Buckle in Brisbane and Perth?

Just noticed SEN is now 48kbps, 3MP is now 40kbps, Aussie is 40kbps while MTR is still 128kbps
