7 Mate appears very unlikely to appear on SCTV here in Darwin until after the commonwealth games.

The reason for that is SCTV must by law show the commonwealth games to those who are yet to upgrade to digital. It doesn't matter if the games are shown in DDT or ONE HD or not, the law states any sport shown on TEN must be shown to everybody regardless if they have digital or not. So because DDT is a digtial only station, SCTV must show the games on the old signal as well.. The same applies to AFL as well.

It makes sense in Central australia but it doesn't make any sense in Darwin.

Unfortunately until the games are over, 7 Mate won't be screening in Darwin anytime soon.

You could be right, that 7mate might not make it to Darwin anytime soon. However, wouldn't SC only have an legal obligation to show the Comm Games on SC-SD? That would leave SC-HD available to be converted to 7mate. But, yeah, don't hold your breath.

If DDT is in the same boat as TDT, its not a legal requirement for Southern Cross to show the games at all and the same for the AFL. Its more a matter of making money than any legal requirement. DDT/TDT don't have to have an analog channel the only requirement is that it has to be shown on the SD channel. At least thats how I understand it anyway.

I know the current AFL arrangement on saturdays in both Darwin and Tassie is stupid and should be scrapped.

However if SCTV chooses not to show the games on the analog channel and if the viewer who has a a old analog television set and has yet to upgrade to digital (via a HD set top box or a new set with a HD tuner inside) and get very upset at missing out on the games, would that be tough luck for that viewer because that viewer had plenty of opportunites to upgrade to digital over a long period of time? is that what you are saying?

Yeah pretty much. There are many areas in Tassie that don't have digital at all yet and its Southern Cross that is dragging their feet on this matter. I think the only reason Southern Cross show the current AFL games is because they want to make money as well as not have to deal with constant complaints from angry viewers.

Following news that Tassie won't get the new channels anytime soon, I'd say the same applies to Darwin.

I am tipping 7Mate to arrive in Darwin sometime in 2011, and channel 11 to come to Darwin in 2012 sometime. So any launch of 7Mate in Darwin on september 25 is extremely unlikely to happen, and there certainly won't be a launch of channel 11 for darwin early next year either, and Darwinites would continue to have to wait as usual.

GO! is the only new channel to arrive on October 1 in store for Darwin. Not sure about Nine's 3rd channel - another delay is possible - maybe 2011 for Darwin to get Nine's 3rd channel.
