According of wikipedia Foxtel's plan to convert all its channels to widescreen before the end of 2010. The past few weeks a few shows and promos aired some 16:9 in a 4:3 format.

Nothing is likely to change now until February due to the festive season and many staff taking breaks.

What is the point of a channel like Boomerang going WS, when 98% of your content is 4:3, why bother?

Anyway I noticed that Go! on Foxtel showed an ep of Star Trek Original Series, and stretched it to 16:9! Is this Nine or Foxtel doing that?

Was it stretched or 're-mastered' like Seinfeld? I've seen Star Trek on Go! and I thought it looked fine

Not sure.. I'm sure someone else saw it, they are showing 2 eps each Sunday (and repeating them same day).

Looks like Foxtel is just downscaling the HD channel feed to make their own SD version rather than taking the 4:3 overseas channel feed which has those stupid episode titles permanently on the screen. Makes you wonder why they didn't do that as soon as they got the HD feed several months ago.

Hooray,
Finally after all this time TCM goes Widescreen.
I notice that it's now Stereo as well.

Picture quality on some of their newer stuff seems to have improved as well.

Wouldn't they just put black bars down either side like every other 16:9 channel does when showing 4:3 stuff?

Hi there Laurie.

Certainly all of their pre mid fifties stuff will still be 4:3 and I pray they don't try to blow the image up or stop showing them.
Watching it last night the older 4:3 movies, thankfully, were run correctly with the black bars on both sides of the TV screen.

The best part of this upgrade will be seeing all of their many fabulous post 50s Cinemascope and later PanaVision movies finally as they were meant to be seen and heard. ( Anamorphic and Stereo )
The picture quality of these widescreen titles look terrific in their promos. ( nice new prints )

Some of their older promos are still 4:3 but the new wide screen ones look great.

Trouble is I only have it for two weeks while it's free. :-(
