Sales ratio in Japan last week was 7.3:1 in favour of the Wii...

DS Lite: 117,193
Wii: 64,529
PSP: 24,711
PS2: 11,097
PS3: 8,776
360: 2,533

At this rate, games publishers are going to start getting cold feet for the PS3 in 5... 4... 3... 2...

Does anyone have the figures for players including PS3 and 360 add-on?

cheers :)

As requested partially, apologies for lack of pies and charts

Slight increase in BRD's advantage for the week but not enough to change YTD or SI percentages.

Week 70/30

Sales ratios of individual titles for week ending 17th June:

1. Ghost Rider (100)
2. Planet Earth HD (26.72)
3. Breach (21.19)
4. Apocolypto (13.69)
5. POTC: DMC (13.60)
6. Planet Earth BD (13.12)
7. POTC: CBP (11.34)
8. Casino Royale (10.05)
9. Blood Diamond (6.71)
10. Primeval (6.69)
xx. Letters from Iwo Jima BD (6.49)
xx. Batman Begins (6.33)
xx. Flags of our Fathers HD (5.88)
xx. Letters from Iwo Jima HD (5.77)
xx. Flags of our Fathers BD (4.92)

yy. Departed combined (8.52)

Interesting to see the performance of Ghost Rider compared with the other titles. Certainly lends weight to the argument that Day and Date releases of new titles is what drives sales, not catalogue releases.

The sales figures for the next week will be interesting. There were 12 exclusive HD-DVD releases and 2 dual format releases against no new BR exclusive releases so it will be interesting to see whether or not HD-DVD can get closer to BRD. Personally I just can't see it because there isn;t one title among those 14 that I'd buy.

Watched Ghost Rider yesterday. One thing these sales figures proves is people still have no taste in movies.

Preach, Surely these figures would only be representative of the American market trends.

Wouldn't European markets show a different bias where HD DVD tends to be the more popular format ?

It could be different. I don't know. That's why I put "US Market Only" in the thread title. ;)

I could only find two articles on it. Both contradicting each other!

hd-dvd-takes-early-lead-in-european-market

So far, over three times as many European films are on HD DVD compared to Blu-ray: 35 to 10

and this one:

Blu-ray-easily-surges-past-HD-DVD-in-Europe

In November of last year, HD-DVD was selling significantly better than Blu-ray until a week after the launch of the PS3. This marked the rise of Blu-ray sales and after the March 23 European launch of the PS3, a similar trend was observed in the continent. According to the Blu-ray Disc Association, 87 percent of all HD media sales came in their format.

So that clears that up!

Just found this quote in an article on Gizmodo:

Amazingly, this writer at Game World Network used the US data, not the European data. The EU data actually shows Blu Ray kicking the piss out of HD-DVD in terms of title sales

HD Format War Limps on in Europe

Still nothing concrete. Just BS and unsubstantiated statements from both sides. I'll keep dredging. B)

Some reported information from Germany:

Total number of disc sales: BD 62,000 HD-DVD 34,000

Total Revenue with BD products: ~ 2 million Euros HD-DVD < 1 million Euros

Total number of disc sales since PS3 launch (march 2007) : BD 57,000 HD-DVD 18,000 (!)

~ 2,500 BD discs sold per week, ~ 1,400 HD-DVD

Number of available titles: Blu-Ray 115 titles HD-DVD 101 titles

source: media control

Sorry, they didn't post an active link.

From what I've read it appears that these ratios are similar in France and the UK as well. Overall it seems to be playing out very similar to the US.

Please note though that these numbers are extremely small with 3 months worth of sales being about a third of what is sold in the US per week so they're not really going to have much of an impact on the "war" at this stage.

As a matter of fact I think the last time Europe influenced a war was 1945 and even then the Americans decided it for them.

As these figures for BR disc sales are largely driven by the adoption of the PS3 as a Blu-ray player, it will be interesting to see what happens to them if the current version of the PS3 (pre- profile 1.1) fails to be compatible with future BR discs.

While 1.1 may be a problem for standalone units, I don't see any reason why the PS3 should have a problem with it. It's a powerful computer for crying out loud. While they may not be able to enable it entirely through firmware, they should be able to install some sort of BD-J emulator on the hard drive that a new firmware knows it has to load in order to play these discs.

Mind you, that's not to say they will do it. Just saying that I'm sure they could get it to work if they really want to.

Shouldn't be any more difficult than say writing an emulator to play old PS2 games should it? ;) :P

Just found an interesting link over at AVS. It shows the sales ranking for DVD players at one of their major electronics retailers (Circuit City):

Circuit City DVD Player Sales Rankings

Now this is a live/updated link so it might look differently when you click on it but as of right now the new Sony BDP-S300 Blu Ray player is ranked at #5. There are only two stand alone units above it (2 Philips units, the others above it are portables).

What I find interesting is that it's ranked ahead of the Sony and Samsung SD-DVD players (6th and 8th respectively). If this is sustainable it's good news for HDM going mainstream. Of course, as this player has just been released it could simply be a result of pent up demand and it may die off in a similar way the PS3 did.

As an aside, the highest ranking HD-DVD player is the HD-A2 in 21st place. Even more interesting is the price on this unit. They're selling it for $272.

Neilsen BRD/HD-DVD Videoscan Numbers for Week Ending 1st July 2007:

Week 65/35
Year to Date 67/33
Since Inception 60/40

As expected, a slight swing back to HD-DVD this week due to the fact that there were 14 new titles released for the week on HD-DVD and only 2 on Blu Ray (both of which were released on HD-DVD as well).

The consistent 2:1 ratio finally had an effect on the since inception numbers which changed 1 percentage point in Blu Rays favour.

Clearly bu-ray are selling more discs, but at a 5:1 player advantage, a 2:1 sales advantage must be somewhat concerning
