Due shortly, looks like we should be able to buy it for under $40.
Another double dip in November for the extended cut...

Anyone see this in 4k 3d.

Those 4k demos at the shops are mezmerizing.

I am not sure this was widely released in 4K 3D. I think the need to project at 48fps may have precluded 4K 3D in suburban cinemas, and limited it to 2K 3D. What we would need to know is the distribution format delivered to the suburban cinema and what the suburban projector was capable of.

This page provides some technical details: http://www.imdb.com/...ref_=tt_dt_spec. You may note reference to a 2K digital intermediate. However the 70mm IMAX version may have used at least some higher resolution material.

What I saw at my suburban cinema looked like only 2K 3D. The 48fps made it beautifully fluid!

I hope it looks good in 3D. I wonder if the 2D version suffered at the expense of the 3D or 50Hz versions? Perhaps the director tended to assume it was 3D first and then translated to 2D?

I'm normally not all that hung up on the image quality of a movie, especially if I'm watching it in 720p, but for some reason both my wife and I found this movie had a real cartoony CGI feel to it. Even many of the set scenes (e.g. sitting around a camp fire) seemed a little like the old John Wayne movies where they stood beside a cactus in a pot plant and had a painted backdrop of the setting sun at the back of the stage. Obviously not that abrupt, but for a movie meant to be the pinnacle of CGI story telling I was often taken out of the story by the graphics. Perhaps too ambitious or perhaps the 3D version resolves that.

FWIW I didn't find it an issue with the first chapter.

Regards

Peter Gillespie

Has anyone found this in store today?

Edit: JB price has dropped from $47 to $35 for the 3D version according to their website.

I picked one up as well.  Should be a good watch in the HT.

This looked superb in 3D on the scope screen.  The audio was top notch esp Smaug's voice.

Just watched it last night.

I however had a problem trying to play it without the menu poping up during the main movie playing, never seen this happen before!

Had to go through a couple of stops, then play again and when a screen pops up asking if you would like to continue from last play, i select yes and it would get rid of the menu.

Basically, i go to the disc menu, press the play movie highlight, movie starts with the credits and at the same time the disc menu(about 1/4 of the screen height) scrolls up trying to tell you to select an option ( play movie, select scene, special features ), and stays there while the movie is still playing normally...

This was the AU 3D version, havent tried 2D yet.

Mine arrived last Monday, the 3D is excellent. I was only going to watch disc 1, I was tired, I ended up watching both, very happy with the purchase.
